Living in Milan, Italy?

Hey im new in Milan.. originally from London England and iv just moved to Milan, from Paris where i was living with my french boyfriend for a year, and i recently followed him to sustain our relationship. I have no friends, desperately need to work, and Im also black.. which doesnt mean to imply that im subject to racism, but it does mean i get people gawping at me all day long! That is not my biggest issue but the fact that i have no friends and have NO social life really hits hard! im desperate for some advice from ppl in similar situations or in the same city and could give me some tips on what to do! Leaving my boyfriend however is not an option, WE are at a great point together in terms of feelings so id ruin it all.

thanks for your time.x

People of colour doesn't fit in easily in Italy, unfortunately. And when you don't speak the language, it's even harder. However, I've ever only travel to Milan for vacation and visiting my friends, so I don't know how much what I'm saying next would help.

How about starting by learning the language, so that you can start to communicate with the locals, and show that you're making an effort to interact with them? Not only that, chances are if you're taking some language classes, those who are attending the language school are likely to be expats, and therefore interested in making some friends. And talking of expats, how about connecting with other expats in the city if there's such group present? They would probably relate to your experience more, and will be able to dispense some more valuable advices.

Alternatively, how about checking with your boyfriend about hosting a small party where he can invite his friends/co-workers + their partners over and you get to meet some people to start with. Who knows, you may connect with someone attending the party and be good friends. Don't host large parties though, you'll end up too busy doing all the work and not enough time to stop and chat and get to know someone.

    Good luck!
