Question about computer virtual memory?

A message keeps coming up that my virtual memory is running low and my computer is running slow. Did a disk cleanup, defrag and scan disk but the problem keeps coming back.

How do I increase the virtual memory or fix the problem?

The very fact that your pc is using virtual memory tells me you have far more crap running than your ram can handle! Close half dozen messengers and file sharing programs down. Turn some of that crap off you dont really need running. Take a basic pc course so you can understand how it works. Get more ram.

Virtual Memory is space allocated on your hard drive for those times when your physical memory (RAM) is not enough.

To increase the amount of virtual memory go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory "Change" > Custom Size > adjust as needed. 2 times your physical RAM is a good minimum and 3 times your physical memory in MB is good for your maximum.

But, the best solution is to buy an additional stick of RAM, and install it which will increase the amount of physical memory on your computer. RAM is dirt cheap these days and your computers performance will increase substantionally with the additional memory.

By default virtual memory grows and managed automagically so what you need to do is more drastic file deletion besides simple cleanup/defrag/scan because those simple tasks free only a fraction of what you could've deleted manually (including uninstall).

If that fails to address the issue; slave a new hard drive to your PC and manually tells Windows to use that as virtual memory.

If I were you, I wouldn't touch the virtual memory thing. If you set it too low or too high, you can seriously affect your system's performance, and do lots of nasty problems. It's set to what your system needs by default.

Here are things you could do:

    1. Do you have malware installed? Malware can do nasty, nasty stuff to your computer, and eat up RAM (as well as virtual memory). Use a decent, lightweight virus scanner (I recommend AVG Free and Avira AntiVir Personal).

    2. Do you have lots of programs open? Having several programs open at the same time can also eat up RAM and virtual memory. Close some programs, or alter your startup programs (details here:http://www.wikihow.com/Alter-Startup-Programs-in-W...

As other girl said, do you have several IM programs open? I used to do that to manage my numerous friends, but I got a decent replacement for all of them. I got Pidgin and Mebo (IM website) and they work well.

    3. You might have too little RAM. RAM as low as 512 MB can cause problems. 1GB or 2GB is the standard now.

    That's it! ^__^
