Can you think of real-life situations that involve area and perimeter?

I teach pre-algebra, and I need lots of these for an activity we are doing. Thanks!

If your lawn is 40 feet by 200 feet, and you buy a bag of grass fertilizer that will cover 4,000 sq. ft., do you have enough fertilizer?

You decide to build a fence around your lawn. How many feet of fencing will you need?

You could use the area/perimeter of a garden, a pool or pool fence, an animal pen, the area or perimeter of a city (I don't know how good that will be but maybe)

My mom works for an insurance company and has me go out to houses... I measure the perimeter with a special "counter tool" around the house. Then she uses it to figure the area when she gets into the office.

    AREA:

Somebody has to paint the ceiling/walls.

Somebody has to tile the floors with some unit square tiles.

PERIMETER: Somebody jogs everyday along the perimeter of a garden.

Ah, I'm in geometry this year. I remember pre-algebra in 7th grade. But, yeah, you could say that you need the area of a room to install carpet, and perimeter for the walls, I think.

yes. Say If your a realtor and you have to measure someones land so they can sell their home on the right info you would have to use area and perimeter to see how large or small the land is.

a fence for a farm, up against a barn.

i got that one a lot in algebra

there aren't enough problems with stuff like painting walls or fencing up yards

I would say something that has to do with putting in carpet, wallpaper, border, maybe even wrapping gifts!
