Why are shower ceilings lower than the rest of the room?

My bathroom has nine foot ceilings, but the shower is only 7.5 foot. I then got to looking around and all the showers and shower tubs ceilings in my house are lower than the finished ceilings. Why is this?

I am asking because I plan on rebuilding my shower and would like to get rid of the dropped ceiling.

A low ceiling helps to keep the shower nice, warm, and steamy. A high ceiling will allow the steam to rise up higher and escape faster.

I don't know why they do that, but our ceilings are dropped too. Maybe they run ductwork through that space? Or pipes? The ceilings in the last place I lived weren't dropped over the showers/tubs.

Never ever seen this. How odd. Take it out if you can. Will look much better.
