crusties are normal in the healing process. The crust is dried secretion that happens as your body sloughs off lymph and dead cells. as long as the secretion is clear, white or slightly yellowed, you have nothing to worry about.

reasons why a piercing will start to get extra crusty:

    you slept on it

you mess with it a lot

sudden change in the weather (like going from warm to really cold)

    bumping it around a lot

mixing too much salt in your sea salt soaks

    over cleaning

you should only be cleaning your piercing 2-3 times a day and not messing with it other than that. your cleaning routine should include sea salt soaks (1/4 teaspoon sea salt per 8 oz of water) and optional cleaning with an unscented antibacterial or antimicrobial soap. I say optional because depending on the shape of you ear it may be hard to do and the sea salt soak is the most important part. Alternately, you can clean with H2Ocean, which sprays on and works great.

I have a rook to forward helix orbital that is still healing (I've had it about a month now) it started getting extra crusty about a week ago, which was when the weather started changing here. ALL of my piercings, even the ones that I've had for years reacted by getting crusty when the weather changed.

just keep cleaning (but not over cleaning) and you'll be fine. Cartilage piercings take a long time to heal, so you've still got a lot of healing time to go.

ps: You should NEVER clean a healing piercing with peroxide, rubbing alcohol or triple antibiotics (like bactine). they are too harsh. THey dry out and irritate the area and will kill the cells that your body is trying to make to heal.

That's not normal, you have to clean it at least once per day. Try rubbing eucalyptus oil on it after you clean with rubbing alcohol.
