Auto tech is always a good move. Except in Michigan. When times are bad people want to save money on transportation and will repair rather than replace. In good times the old car just gets sold to the next owner and they repair. There are so many cars on the road it's hard to see a day when techs will not be needed.
The only drawback I could see is that the technology is in for some radical upgrades that you'll have to keep up with. Plan on staying in school, at least off and on, for the rest of your life - but that will apply to most future jobs and careers any way.

If you're talking about a career as an auto mechanic, yes, that is a good career choice. In good economic times or bad, there will always be cars that develop problems or break down. Knowing how to fix them will always be an excellent skill to have.
