Allot depends on the crime, how long it was, and what they want to do. For example someone who has a conviction for a crime against a person (e.g. battery, aggravated assault) would have a hard time getting a job in education, health care, or any job that requires contact with people. However it may not be a large bar to employment where they are dealing with things like repair, computers, or other jobs where people contact is minimal. Now if their crime is against property (e.g. theft, embezzlement, criminal damage) then working with people may not be as much as an issue than if they were looking for a job in a bank for example.
With that said if the crime was serious such as burglary, murder, child abuse, or rape for example then getting a job will be difficult regardless how long ago it was. Best advice would be get a temporary job and prove yourself. As you prove yourself then getting better jobs will be possible.
