Terrell Owens versus Jason Witten?

Just yesterday I saw Terrell Owens has started in with yet another quarterback. He is accusing Tony Romo and Jason Witten of trying to squeeze him out of the game plan. He says Romo forces throws to Witten which result in interceptions. And he had private meetings with Dallas Cowboy offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in hopes to rectify the situation. I have seen several, actually too many, Cowboys games and highlights since TO joined the Cowboys in 2006 and actually feel that Romo forces too many passes to Owens that result in interceptions not Witten. I am including the number of targets and catches for both Owens and Witten since they became teammates in 2006 and below it are my questions.

Owens

2006: 153 targets, 85 catches, 56%

2007: 141 targets, 81 catches, 57%

2008: 113 targets, 55 catches, 49%

3 Yrs: 407 targets, 221 catches, 54%

Whitten

2006: 92 targets, 64 catches, 70%

2007: 141 targets, 96 catches, 68%

2008: 95 targets, 64 catches, 67%

3 Yrs: 328 targets, 224 catches, 68%

As you see Owens is thrown too more but Witten catches more. I do realize that most of Owens passes are longer down the field and could be less acurate. But Witten will have more passes thrown to him in traffic and has bigger defenders to deal with punishing him. Also this season in the Cowboys 8 wins Owens has been targeted 62 times for 34 catches versus 51 times for 21 catches in the 5 losses. He is actually being thrown too 3 more times per game in losses while catching the same amount of balls. Witten on the other hand has been targeted 56 times for 41 catches in wins versus 39 times for 23 catches in loses which comes out to almost the same exact number of targets and catches in wins and losses.

My three questions are:

Do you think that TO is throwing another quarterback under the bus?

Do you think TO should just shut up and play?

Do you think Dallas needs to get rid of TO now that they have Roy Williams?

Nobody else has seem to have noticed; but, they DO play different positions. Therefore, it is a little like comparing apples to oranges: not the same thing. I'm sure Tony Romo and the quarterback's coach do not set out each year to have more plays designed for either the tight end or wide receiver. All that being laid on the table, the Cowboy's would be healthier as a team and organization if they traded Owens, Pacman Jones and had someone else BUY the team...cause Jerry Jones is a BIG part of the problem!!!

It was supposed to be a private meeting with Garrett but someone opened there mouth. I do see the point though he needs to catch more but TO gets bigger chunks of yardage when he does. TO is a beast and can cause damage on the board and to DB's.

I think he was in the right this time and going to Garrett and didn't go to the media this time but someone took it outside the team.

Good question though he is a good topic.. Everyone hates TO until he is on your team. FACT Eagles have done great since he left same with the niners.

As of now ROMO is the problem nobody else. INT. in the last 17 games. The team can't bail him out of all the mistakes.

Just yesterday I was watching ESPN talking about this issue nonstop. But one thing I did notice is, all their sources were unnamed. They also didn't air any of these so called interviews with Terrell Owens. It's no secret that the sports analysts at ESPN hate T.O. and the Cowboys. So I came to two conclusions.

    1. The interviews aren't true because they most likely would have aired them if they were.

    2. ESPN is exaggerrating the actual truth so they can boost their ratings.

The sad part is, people are actually believing every word they say.

It seems that he is trying to get in a war of words with Romo, but for his part Romo has stayed quiet. I'm sure he's talked to both Jeff Garcia and McNabb to get advise on how to deal with T.O. antics.

It would be nice if TO would be quiet but I doubt it. The team doesnt need this distraction right now.

Williams was brought in to eventually replace T.O. It sems that Jerry Jones will soon have to make a decision whether to keep Owens or to release him and move towards the future with Williams.

    Three answers:

    1. No, stuff like this gets blown out of proportion because it's TO (and it wasn't just him in the meeting with Jason Garrett, Roy and Crayton were in the meeting as well).

    2. He should be able to express his concerns in a constructive way to the coaching staff without the media finding out and twisting and turning a clandestine meeting into some sort of gripe session.

    3. No, they aren't going to get rid of him, they just signed him to a long-term deal. Releasing him would be salary-cap suicide.

Yes Yes and Yes. TO couldn't get along with Garcia in SF and he was chummy with McNabb at Philly for awhile but when push came to shove he did undermine McNabb, and now it's Romo's turn to be trashed. TO is a talent but he is also a head case. Jerry needs to cut ties with him. Having Roy Williams is not a bad start.

  • OK I have been watching this and laughing at the disaster TO is, as an Eagles fan I have been expecting this. Jerry brought this on himself. But the truth is the real Dallas fans, although we never agree, do not deserve this. But let's face facts, when TO is catching all those TD passes Jerry was right to bring him there. And all I listened to was how TO had matured and this would never happen in Dallas. Well Jerry sold his soul to win and lost.

Hopefully Jerry will cut his losses and move on in 2009 without TO, I will still be rooting against the cowgirls.

TO should just shut up & play football & quit being a drama queen & the answer to all 3 of your questions are YES

  • 1 decade ago

T.O.'s frustration with Romo in general has gotten the best of him.

  • 1 decade ago

    To summarize:

T.O. needs to shut up, concentrate on helping the team win football games, and remember that there is no "I" in "We"

Get rid of him, he is nothing but a cancer
