2001 Kawasaki KLR 650 gas tank?
The 2001 model has the small 3 gallon tank. Can it be fitted with the larger 6 gallon tank that was standard on both earlier and later models without too much trouble?

As I read your question, the first response was "Sounds like a tank from a KLX 650".
Or your whole machine is a KLX 650.
All the KLR 650 used the same size gas tank.
According to the third URL below, the KLX tank holds 2.9 gallons.
Acerbis makes a 4.5 gallon tank for a KLX 650.
There is a company that makes a tank for the KLR 650 that holds around 7-1/2 to 8 gallons, but simply am unable to remember the name of the company.
Hope this helps solve your problem.

Yes the tanks are pretty much interchangeable. That bike did not have any major design changes between 1987 and 2007. I've never seen a KLR with a small tank, you must have a model that was not sold in the US.
