Should We Do Away With the Taser?

The Taser is touted as a "non-lethal" weapon, but there is a growing concern that it is definitely a dangerous weapon. According to an AP article, it has killed more than 400 people in the past five years, many of them innocent citizens. Among those tasered is a man who didn't understand a word of English; a mentally disturbed man threatening to jump off a building who fell off the building when tasered; a deaf man who didn't hear an officer's command, and many more. The officer who ordered the tasering of the man threatening to jump off a building later committed suicide from remorse.

The victims of tasering often have heart conditions or other medical problems that cannot withstand the shock rendered by this weapon. Also, there are officers who use the taser without considering the dangers.

My question is: should the use of tasers be forbidden until some adjustments are made in the dangers they have been proven to have? Should they be reclassified as a lethal weapon, rather than as a nonlethal means of control ?

there are thousands more stories, many worse than examples given.

police state tactics have no business in this country.

    it's a misuse of authority …

No. What else would the police use? The world is an imperfect place & people will die, but the general public should not be put in danger because of someone else's actions. The people who get tasered obviously did something for the police to intervene, so I have little sympathy for them. Plus 80 people a year? If police are forced to use lethal force what will that number become?

First lets consider when and why a Taser is used. It is used when people are acting like a fool. Would you rather them use the "Stick" on them to beat them into compliance. Can't do that as it is cruel.

What about pepper spray. I have personally witnessed a person blow through pepper spray and harm the lady with the spray. Luckily there were real men there to pounce on him to get him off her.

Finally lethal force, that is a better option than Taser. Think not.

Better to keep the Taser, with its risks, than to have lethal force the ONLY choice.

The taser, like the handgun is not the problem. You should see some of the goofs carrying guns and tasers in my area. It's like an affirmative action effort without regards for qualifications. we recently had a 69 year old man with a cane on the sidewalk in front of his house gunned down by police for threatening them with a small pocketknife. He was like your grandfather, an old man with a cane, good grief he could have been talked down with a pretty nurse. We need qualified people who can think behind those tasers and guns rather than T.V watching wannabees.
