if your are vegan what do your pets eat?

I know that vegans do not consume animal products but how about your pets and if you buy your pets treats or clothing is it vegan to? Is it hard to find vegan pet products?

Update:

I still let my kitten eat tuna, and drink milk.

I actually make some of my kittens food.

By Mixing a little bit of regular soy milk in, adding some fake ground beef

and a little tuna(for flavoring for my cat)

and i give him reegular cat food, they have vegan and vegetarian cat/dog foods at health food stores and some pet stores.

(IAMS use horse for their foods)

i myself don't eat any type of meat, and eggs but I do drink milk.

Vegans tend to not support the usage and exploitation of animals. If a dog or cat runs free and comes "home" for sleep and so on, I personally do not see the issue. I also have no issue with feeding animals- dogs and cats can live well on plant foods if it's done right, and in some cases, dogs do better- a plant diet, but only if it's perfectly healthy. The word own is a human word, I'm pretty sure the pet would have his version of what you are to him! The vegan society owner DOnald Watson, himself kept pets. He grew up on a farm and one day saw the suffering & the stealing , the taking that humans do from animals, and thought how wrong it was. He decided to not take anything more off them, for food, clothing. After all, we give them nothing, we just take. That was his philosophy anyway, and he founded the Vegan Society. AS he kept pets on the farm, I don't know what his thoughts on the subject of feeding them was- they invariably caught things to eat the way wild animals can do. Modern day, city-dwelling people, well, if the pet is being used for anything other than cohabitation, I guess that would be against veganism. Most dogs and cats are extremely domestic, and I don't know if DOnald Watson evisioned a day where cats spent their entire lives inside a 40th floor apartment happily, but it does happen. If I ever have a pet, I won't give it animals to eat.

Dogs and cats can be fed formulated vegan diets...Wafcol is a brand of veggie dog food, and I have seen veggie cat food. Cats can have artificial taurine (a necessary nutrient usually only found in meat) to make their food safe for them to eat...a cat without taurine can go blind and eventually die, I believe.

So yes, it is possible. It is also completely unethical. Humans have the capability to make a rational choice, I completely respect the vegan diet, however to force that choice upon a being who would naturally choose meat (the dog less so, it is far more omnivorous than the cat but still mostly eats meat) is repulsive. A true animal lover would respect the nature of the animal, and feed ethically killed bones and raw food from the butcher, not vegetables. To me that represents massive animal cruelty. If you dont like the eating habits, dont buy the pet.

If you want something vegetarian, buy a rabbit, chinchilla, degu or guinea pig.

I agree with Mandy. I understand that you yourself has issues with animal mistreatment or for whatever reason you are a vegan. BUT your pet has totally different views on eating meat. Unfortunately your vegan-ism won't stop your cat from chasing a bird or your dog from chasing a cat or squirrel!

I would suggest for you to just find organic food/treats for your pet. It's your best bet because at least the animals used in it were probably not hurt in an inhumane way.

Cats and dogs shouldn't be vegetarians, they are carnivores by nature. Humans can get by with this because we are omnivores, but carnivorous animals should stick to meats, this is what they are designed to eat. Without the right diet a pet wouldn't be healthy.

Buy pets that are naturally vegans!

Mainly rodents - rabbit, hamster, rat, mouse, gerbil etc...

    Pets don't need clothes :\

And fruit/vegetables for treats! Or you can probably find some recipes on the internet...make your own!
