What would happen to religion if aliens were discovered?

Serious question.

These aliens have completely different religions which have nothing to do with the ones on Earth. Then what?

I would still be an atheist.

Other religions would just have yet one more different religion to denounce. It would give them an excuse for hating the aliens. Some religions might rationalize the alien's religion, no matter how unrelated, to their own. Since it is based on superstition and myth, you can pretty much mold it to your liking.

You are, I think, using the word "aliens" to mean an alien species from some other planet. Really, the original definition of that word meant something more akin to a different nationality. It can still mean this today e.g. in the phrase "illegal alien".

Read this way we already know what happens to religion. Since we have historic examples from when Australia, the Americas and other previously unknown regions along with their native inhabitants were first encountered by Europeans. Those practitioners of the militarily dominate culture never really paused to question their faith instead they tried to destroy the religion of the newly subjugated peoples with varying degrees of success.

If space aliens with a radically different religion were in fact discovered the ardent faith heads would surely remain unmoved. Some might even try to convert them!

Firstly God made the world. and the aliens too. They too will have a religion they could just be more advance but they will still bow to God.Just as like we have different religions here. Food for thought. If the earth is not cultivated, it becomes a jungle where useless weeds grow; but if a cultivator comes and tills the ground, it produces crops which nourish living creatures. It is evident, therefore, that the soil needs the cultivation of the farmer If there were no educator, there would be no such things as comforts, civilization or humanity. If a man be left alone in a wilderness where he sees none of his own kind, he will undoubtedly become a mere brute; it is then clear that an educator is needed. Divine education is that of the Kingdom of God: it consists in acquiring divine perfections, and this is true education; for in this state man becomes the focus of divine blessings, the manifestation of the words, “Let Us make man in Our image, and after Our likeness.” 1 This is the goal of the world of humanity.

I don't think it would affect Christianity at all. There are different religions on earth that have nothing to do with Christianity, what does that change? Now, I really don't expect aliens to be discovered, but I'm answering your hypothetical question.

    Nothing.

First, many of the concepts of religion are alien to the non-believers. That's one of the many reasons that atheists reject even the notion of deity.

So, it would not surprise me in the least if an alien culture had a different view of deity. After all, we see that on earth - among Buddhists, for instance. But even among the Hindu, there are similarities and I believe we would find similarities that were remarkable for their existence.

I suspect that most religious people would twist their religions around one way or another in order to account for the existence of aliens (assuming their religions required twisting, not all of them would), and many of them would probably proceed to try and convert the aliens. The remainder would either abandon their religions, or simply deny that the aliens actually exist (saying it's all a conspiracy by the gay lieberal atheist media or something).

As a matter of fact, I actually asked a couple of similar questions before, if you want to have a look at some of the answers I got you can check them out here:

"if" aliens were discovered, then this wont exactly effect everyone because people believe in their religions and suddenly an alien comes along and you start believing in that, that'll show you weren't true to your religion, anyway if aliens had their own religion ain't that their problem because because everyone here already to belong to different faiths so if they had a different faith i don't see how that'll effect everyone else

Then the Christians try to convert the aliens.

We already did discover aliens the only reason you don't know yet is because people are stupid and the government doesn't want to answer questions like this one...

Nothing. There is nothing in religion to preclude the existance of others, from other worlds. If anything, it would more deeply affirm the beliefs.
