DAP and ZYLKENE used on Dogs?

Hi i have 3 male dogs all neutered and get on great together. They are 2 1/2 years old 15months old and 7 months old. Now ive received several complaints from my new neighbours about the dogs barking. Ive lived in 2 previous address and no one has ever complained. the dogs are well used to me going out for a few hours a day. Ive left them for like 15minutes and waited outside the door and they have stopped barking in a minute and sem to settle ive also done this for 30 mins and nothing. when i return from longer trips they have not been barking. They do obviously bark sometime like when i can come in or at the postman but the barking only last for about a minute tops. Ive tried talking to next door but hes quite aggressive. Ive never been nothing but nice and even offered to give him my mobile number so if they do bark i will get home asap! Im just worried about losing my dogs. I hardly ever go out anymore and only leave when i know next door are out. Ive missed allot of uni as i am worried for his reaction. I don't want to upset anyone. I don't want to use anti barking collars as ive used them before and they would go off if another dog barked or the dog even scratched. So are these DAP and Zylkene alternatives are any good? Just so worried now. I also walk my dogs before going out and leave the telly on with toys and chews.

thanks and best wishes Kim

I work in a veterinary practice and DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheramones)and Zylkene is something we always keep in stock. DAP especially as it was something that we promoted alot during november around bonfire night with all the fireworks, etc.

I definitely think it is worth trying, i would use a DAP diffuser first or a spray whichever is easier for you, but i think the plug in diffuser would work better because you can plug it in to the room where the dog spends most of the time and it spreads itself out within about 40sq metres. They last for about 4 weeks and when its finished you just buy a refill vial.

Basically DAP is based on natural pheromones that the mother would have given off when your dogs were pups and alot younger. It promotes calm and well being and makes them feel more comfortable in their environment.

Zylkene i think is fairly new as is given as a capsule once a day and can take a while to 'kick' in. So if your dogs hate tablets then this product wouldnt help too much at all.

Keeping the telly on or a radio can also help so they can sense and hear that they are not 'alone' in the house.

    Good luck.

I would go to your neighbors and tell them you are trying to fix the problem but you need their help. ask them to write down when the dogs bark and how long the barking lasts. its possible the dogs are just barking at cars going by people walking by to protect their home. but that at least would let you know how often they are barking. its possible they only bark once, and you have some crazy angry neighbors that need something to complain about. look into (i dont know what its called) but theres a mecanism that you can plug in and every time a dog barks it lets off this dog frequency noise and gets them to stop. I dont know how well it works, but it may be worth a shot.

  • Who are these people? Are you in an apartment? Do they have dogs of their own? Can you make friends with them and improve relations that way.? Your dogs are not barking excessively - don't drug your dogs!!! Consider moving again if you have to. Any time you put a chemical in your dog it has other effects then the ones intended. Like bad food fills therm up but it also gives them cancer. Try to work things out with the neighbors, maybe they are scarred of your dogs? Let them meet and become friends (that is if the people are willing). Good Luck!

They won't train your dogs for you, they just sooth them. Video tape your dogs when you go out so you can really see what they're doing. That will help you solve the problem.
