Good starter fish for a 2.5 gallon tank?
Hey guys, I have a small starter tank and am new to fish. It is only 2.5 gallons, and I started out with a couple great guys - a fancy goldfish and an albino cory catfish. They both keep to themselves and play well together. I was thinking of adding a third little guy because there is still a lot of room. What do you recommend? I have a big filter on the tank, but no heating source except the incandescent bulb and no oxygen source except the fresh plants. Any other good low maintenance, friendly fish I could put in there with them? The fish guy at my local pet store is totally worthless! Thanks everyone.

a few hardy livebearers such as guppies, platies, swordtails, mollies but they will reproduce so you will have to give or sell the grown babies to someone
a few hardy egglayers such as white clouds, zebras, and certain tetras
You only want a few fish in this small tank

Always do research on any animal you plan on caring for. There is no room to add a third fish because your tank is extremely overstocked.
The fancy goldfish will grow 6-8 inches, and requires at least a twenty gallon tank. Goldfish require large tanks for optimum health and growth. Goldfish are coldwater fish.
The corydoras prefer to be in small groups and are tropcial fish i.e. needs a heater. Goldfish and tropical fish should not be mixed. It means that the needs of one pet are not being met.
~Your best option is to return those fish and buy a couple guppies or a betta.

properly, your tank's slightly overcrowded. the main i've got ever saved in a three gallon exchange right into a betta and a couple of African Dwarf Frogs, or perhaps THAT exchange into overcrowded. you somewhat could desire to get an even bigger tank in case you like them to stay longer -- i've got little question that it style of sounds like each and every thing's all appropriate, yet they are actually not going to stay or enhance to their maximum ability in there. you could shop the frog (even 2) and the snail in there. i think you additionally can shop the two guppies and snail in there, yet i've got consistently felt twitchy approximately guppies in small tanks, so it would not be my determination. yet yeah, the mollie on my own is in simple terms too lots for that tank, you somewhat, quite, quite could desire to get an even bigger one in case you like your fish to do properly. yet it is not what you have been asking, of course. The temperature -- at first, opposite to what all those fish thermometers insist, there is not any one optimum temperature for all fish, they each and each have an optimum temperature of their own, and all of them ought to be seen. So I did a speedy Google seek, and right this is the optimum temperatures for each of your fish et cetera. Mollies - sixty 8°F - 80 two°F Guppies - 75°F - 80 5°F African Dwarf Frog -- seventy six°F - seventy 8°F secret Snail - sixty 5°F - 80 two°F So quite, all issues seen, you need to be attempting for seventy six°F - seventy 8°F as your temperature because of fact it quite is the style that all of them consider. And yeah, in case you like your fish to stay healthful and stay long, the temperature does count. Fish can many times tolerate different temperatures for a while, yet this has a tendency to rigidity and weaken them. you somewhat do desire that heater. Sorry to be the bearer of undesirable information. i'm hoping you will get something taken care of out -- sturdy success!

Your goldfish is never going to last with only 2.5 gallons..trust me. I was mislead by my pet store and tried keeping two fancy tailed goldies in a 5 gallon tank. It lasted about a week before they were showing severe symptoms of ammonia poisoning and they had to be moved to a much larger tank. I recommend either getting a bigger tank for your goldfish (at least 10 gallons as they produce a lot of waste)...or giving him back to the pet store....its sad but true.

The fish guy at your pet store really is worthless. He should have told you that goldfish get to be a foot long and need a 20 gallon tank. Take the goldfish back and get a betta.

A betta, 2 guppies or 2 african dwarf frogs. Take out the other fish becuase the tank is way to small. The gold Fish can get to over 1 foot.
