This is a Mexican tradition which starts on October 31 (halloween) when the dead visit their families and leave on November 2. This tradition/holiday Day of the Dead was the belief of the ancient indigenous mexicans who believed the departed come to visit their families, and eat and drink, and have a good time and leave on Nov. 2
Mexicans fear death just any culture; yet they are joyously celebrating it also through the Day of the Dead.
Family members usually gather around cemeteries and leave offerings of food shaped like skulls & bones to welcome them.
Also, some families erect an alter by placing the picture of the departed, along with foods shaped in skulls & bones, candles, insense, and marigold.
Source(s): I was at the mall last year on Halloween night, and we went inside this store that looked like it carried halloween stuff, not customs though. And they had banners of "Day of the Dead) placed here and there. I was curious, so I asked the gentleman behind the counter about it, and he graciously explained it to me. I had never heard of this Mexican tradition, but was very fascinated by how he described it. That gentleman was the owner of the store, and of Mexican heritage. - 6 years ago
