Many Christians like to say that one reason to believe in God is that you have nothing to lose.....?

but isn't it the atheists who have nothing to lose?

If we're right, then we're exactly where we started. If we're (very hypothetically) wrong, and the Abrahamic god is real and sends us to be tortured for eternity just because we didn't believe, even though we lived good lives, why would we have wanted to worship a vindictive god like that anyway?

And if it's not the Abrahamic god, all the better because other gods tend to care more about exactly how you lived your life and what good you did, not if you spent it stroking their ego.

I'm not saying anyone should believe or not believe based on wagers like this, but I'm curious to see any thoughts. And please, if you disagree, state reasons other than bible verses, To me, the bible is no more reliable than Harry Potter.

Update:

@Apostle: I'm sorry, have we met? I didn't think so.

Update 2:

Of course I know that Pascal's Wager is wrong. I even said "don't believe or not believe based on wagers." -_- But that doesn't stop people from bringing it up.

Update 3:

Sigh. Why do so many people assume that because I'm atheist I've never studied religion or read the bible?

Pascals wager has a simplistic logic to it yes but lacks truth Regenerative faith, a true Christian has no need to resort to that Child like Logic

  • You make a valid point that is missed by many of the answerers.

I honestly think those who use Pascal's Wager do not comprehend the idea that another religion (or no religion) could be correct.

Don't let these people get you down. Your question is both valid and correctly worded. They just assume that atheists don't know about the Bible rather than they may have read and rejected it.

    Have a hug,

    (((Amber)))

and keep up the good work, you may be the cause of 1 less Pascal's Wager question.

  • good job. i also bring up the fact that no matter what you believe, you have something to lose. christians spend six months (not counting holy days, etc.) on their knees praying to their imaginary friend. if they are wrong, then that is half a year of their life that they missed out on.

also, i like to turn paschal's wager around on christians when they bring it up. all you have to say is "what if you're wrong and zeus is the real god? what about allah? what about ra? the flying spaghetti monster?

i love it when people assume that i know nothing of christianity. i went to a catholic school, am reading the bible, and believed in god for fourteen years of my life.

paschal's wager is religion's last stand argument. it is an attempt to strike fear into those that don't follow their religion, and bribe them with eternal orgasms with a choir of angels.

you really don't get it do you?

God will never send you to hell. He does let you go if that's what you choose to do.

God loves you that He sent His son to pay the price of sin for you, yet you get mad and reject that. It doesn't make anysense.

If someone was going to pay your speeding ticket you would gladly accept it, yet when something more eternal comes along you get all pissy.

It's funny how you want christians to respond and yet not quote the source of our faith, because you don't believe. That's like asking a mechaninc to explain how to build a car but not use the manual.

God loves you, and you believe He's vindictive because He will hold you accountable for your actions.

The vindictive and evil god that most Christians like to promote IS NOT the God of the Bible. Throughout scriptures that most people pass by, God is promoted to be a god of "peace, long-suffering and love". The thing is, is that even if you don't believe in God but you still have a good heart, then God sees your potential for spiritual growth and does not inflict a fiery pit upon you. It is so comforting to know that and all that is required to have an accurate knowledge of God is an open mind and heart.

I believe that even an atheist, if his heart is good, will be saved by God.and not be destroyed like some think. No one knows whats in most peoples hearts, that's why we are suppose to forgive, and knowing this makes me believe that not all of us have to serve, or believe God to find favor with him. A Christian or other believer however is expected to do" his will" because that is what they dedicated their life toward and he expects that from them, but others-, to God are yet to be led in his direction. That could be our faults.

There is a huge level of denial in this logic. Atheists for the most part see Christianity as one of many religions. Christians don't think quite the same way. They don't factor in other religions for the most part. Non in instances like these anyway, so I have found.

Pascal's Wager is a lousy argument no matter what side you approach it from

The big question remains: What if you're wrong?

If you're right, then we're all dead, forever.

If you're wrong, you may be stuck with the decrepit results of your unbelief for all eternity, while the faithful enjoy eternal life and all the rewards that go with it

The least you could do is study authentic Catholic theology, since it provides the most complete and scholarly treatment of these matters, based not merely on scripture, but on all revealed truth.

If we believe just in case..........I mean won't the "All Powerful Lord" see through that. Just a little? I mean he is god. If he's real. I'm positive he'll see through that little rouse.

If you can't put your whole heart in it, but do it just in case, I don't know, I don't know....hmm
