Roman Catholics: How do you defend the Vatican opposing the UN measure to decriminalize homosexuality?
The measure simply calls on governments around the world to (1) stop throwing homosexuals in jail, or in extreme circumstances (2) stop executing them. The resolution has been signed by every country in the European Union. So instead of aligning themselves with the EU countries on this issue, the Vatican has chosen to line itself up with Iran, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Burundi, Afghanistan, and Sudan and the nearly eighty other countries that punish homosexuality with significant jail time or death.

Horrible.
In response to PaulCyp
The only rationale for opposing it given by the Vatican is that it 'could lead to the acceptance of gay marriage'.
This has absolutely nothing to do with gay marriage. Just not killing and imprisoning people just because of a sexual orientation.

It must be noted that many pro homosexual groups have recently put forward false and slanderous teachings on the position of the Catholic Church toward homosexuality. No Catholic Church teachings exists that homosexuals should be killed or imprisoned. Ask the source for real data instead of the make believe they hold up as truth.
The article you quote does state why the Vatican opposes the measure. It does not mean they support jail and death sentences. That is the slanderous and dishonest misreading I mentioned. Then if someone tries to get up and defend the position, they get some garbage rational like this paper can't print anything for religion. Liar. They just don't want to put the other position in print.
Also please note the Catholic Church leadership can put forth the teachings of Jesus, and are not allowed to change His teachings.
A good question might be, why do so many want to tell Catholics what their teachings for their members should be? I want to practice my faith without outsiders telling me what my faith should be. Go live your life and I'll live mine.
From the Catechism #2358
Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

The Vatican would probably reinstate the Inquisition and witch trials given the opportunity so this is their latest incarnation of ignorance which they will meekly apologize for at some point in the future when it doesn't mean anything and their church memberships take a stock market dive. I don't care what they tell their members to do or not do but when it comes to extending their influences beyond that boundary , i.e. playing politics, then they should pay a penalty!

The pope is looking further down the road that you are, if you're looking down it at all.
The pope is right. It could lead to the widespread acceptance of same-sex marriage.

I think if that is true that is so awful! Jesus told us to love everyone. It is hate the sin, love the sinner.
I hate the way some countries put homosexuals in jail and execute them! I think it is disgusting how they treat them like that and is not right at all. Treating people that way because of their sexuality cannot be justified

The same way they can condemn gay people for having sex outside of marriage while forbidding gay people to marry.
The pro-murder-of-gays Catholic Church is sinning. It is breaking Christ's commandment to treat others as we want to be treated and looking the other way when gay people are murdered by governments such as Iran's. Apparently life only matters to the Catholic Church if it's heterosexual or "unborn."

Well the good news is they forgive John Lennon, I mean that is so much more important a step.
EDIT: Yeah that article is pretty horriffic, hate the sin but love the sinner, my big gay ***.

That is... just sad. Shame on them and the eighty countries that are against this measure.

The article plainly describes why the Church has no choice but to oppose this resolution.
