Why is Christmas Sometimes Spelled as Xmas?

I would like to know why Christmas is sometimes spelled as Xmas. I have a girlfriend who is a Catholic and she has always spelled Christmas with an X. I had read an article once saying that Catholics spell it that way. What is the meaning of the X?

I feel really sorry for the people here raised to believe that "Xmas" is a secular way of spelling "Christmas" and still haven't realized that this is a complete lie. In fact, it's just the opposite. It's actually an old church spelling, and the person who said that the "X" is actually a Greek letter is correct. Please check out the link I provided in the source - I already knew this due to personal knowledge, but the source link shows that what we're saying actually does have foundations in history (and we're not making it up, like churches try to make up the "fact" that "Xmas" is secular).

Because Christ can be written with an X So to shorten it they put Xmas because it was known that X meant Christ First of all, you have to understand that it is not the letter X that is put into Christmas. We see the English letter X there, but actually what it involves is the first letter of the Greek name for Christ. Christos is the New Testament Greek for Christ. The first letter of the Greek word Christos is transliterated into our alphabet as an X. That X has come through church history to be a shorthand symbol for the name of Christ. So all these people that think they are dishonoring Jesus by putting in an X are actually still saying Christmas since the X denotes the shortened greek name Christos...Christ.

it's generally seen as a lazy way to spell Christmas and has NOTHING To do with being Catholic. i would LOVE to see an article about that for it seems very anti Christian. some DO spell it that way with the reminder of St Andrew the Apostle OR the fact that in Greek it's how you start Christ's name but generally, in today's society it is a shortcut around Christ.

The X is not really the letter x it is the Greek letter Chi which is often used as an abbreviation for Christ. There are records showing that X has been used to represent Christ for over a thousand years.

I had always heard X-mas was a secular ay of spelling it and a back handed way to spell Christmas.

    This looks familiar.......LOL

It is spelt that way due to the fact that anti christs or agnostic

believers dont have to add Christ to Christmas in order for them to speak of the holiday in their own jargan. So there for they want to (X) Cross Christ out of Christmas

It is taking Christ out of Christmas. It is not religious but used by atheists who still want the goodies.

Im not sure, but it seems to make sense that an X could also stand for a cross. So, it would be like a catholic cross, and christ and stuff.

X-mas is basically taking "Christ" out of "Christmas".. people are just lazy and don't feel like spelling it out.. or they just don't want to write "Christ" in it..

people who spell it X-mas, shouldn't even celebrate it b/c they don't know the true meaning of Christmas..

xmas is mostly just a short form of Christmas..... like the signs that say deer x-ing instead of crossing
