Does noboby realize that Obama is half white?

Why does every media outlet tout him as black when his mother is white and he was raised by his white grandparents? I know it's perfectly acceptable for black people to take pride in him but- ALL my black friends, black TV shows (see "Chocolate News") comedians, and musicians are rubbing it in our faces. I hear "we won" almost every day! I mean, I voted for Obama myself and I'm in no way racist, but I just think it's weird. He can be referred to as a white man just as he can be referred to as a black man, yet he is our first black President, instead of our first "mixed race" President.

Update:

Yeah ASH, I'm familiar with the one drop rule. And according to you I must be very young because I wasn't around in your "discrimination years". I may be going out on a limb here but isn't discrimination still around? By the way I'm 27 years old so I don't consider myself "very young".

I know exactly what you're saying. I hear black people ranting and raving all the time about how they won. Most people probably don't even realize that he is 50% WHITE, 44%ARABIC and only 6%BLACK! His mother was white and his dad about a quarter black but mostly arabic. Most of the people answering this question are morons. I'm not a racist but how can someone who isn't African American be our first African American president?

Maybe you are very young, but during the discrimination years (remember, the last miscegnation law was repealed sometime in the 1990's although they were rendered unconstitutional earlier than that) to be black required only 1/16th or 1/64th black blood line or some such thing. How come nobody back then realized that mixed race people were part white??

Yes, some of us realize it. I see his race as being mixed just like mine. I am just as much African American as he is but I prefer to just call myself an American.

Yes, darker color genes usually dominate but this isn't always true. Genetics are a strange thing. Mulattoes can have all different skin colors, eye colors, hair colors and hair textures. My family has been mixed for generations and is still mixing races today. We have people with darker skin and blondish afros. We have olive skin and fine brown hair. We have lighter skin and dark thick wavy hair. Dark skin, eyes and hair. There are both brown and green eyes. I even have a cousin who has dark skin, strawberry blond kinky hair and blue eyes! No one should automatically expect that a mixed race person will automatically "look black".(I'm not saying that you stated this)

It is true that the black community will accept those who "look black" much quicker than those of us with lighter skin. And the white community will accept those who "look white" much quicker than those of us with darker skin. We fit in where we can, I guess. For Obama, that was with the black community.

Although I see Obama as mixed, I understand that he needed to identify with one or the other. It's just the way things were back then (and is still). Things have changed a lot and they're getting better.

I know I've rambled a bit in my answer but I wanted to try to explain the very odd place many of us mixed races are put into (I've done a poor job of this). We get prejudice from both sides. We get favoritism from both sides at times. Where I've lived, the one drop rule was uncommon. Basically you were classified by what you most looked like.

I'm not a fan of Obama but I understand the odd place that being "mixed race" can put a person into. I have blacks that identify with me and those who tell me I'm not black enough. I have whites that identify with me and those who tell me that I'm not white enough. We just try to fit in where we can.

the fact that he is half black is even sort of a joke. the guy acts completely white in every sense of the word... the only thing that makes him black personality wise is that he plays basketball... however he is far more black than any president in US history and he really is the first black president.....

let the shows like "chocolate news" rub it in your face.... thats why they were brought on the air the day after he got elected.... anyway I have seen them and they don't really convey serious politics because in all honesty, black people don't really care about politics. Black people voted for Obama because he is black... thats not a racist statement, I would have done the same in their shoes.

Ya know I've had the same problem with this whole thing, and I voted for him too.

I saw people posting on web sites that said "take that Whitey"

I had to bite my tongue and not say " ya know His BLACK father ran off and had to be left to the white folks to raise him" but no I tolerated the hate towards the whites and had to realize. I don't know what it is to be honest. He is half white. Does he deny it? NOPE. But I am tired of the "first African american to be elected" He's not. he's white and black. Where is the "irish american to be elected?"

    Gives up on society.

I think a lot of ppl realize it. I actually saw an episode of Chocolate News where the guy was saying Obama wasn't black enough and he admitted to him being half white.

He didn't pass the brown paper bag test... lol

Obama is black or white, it makes no difference. People shall see and judge him from his work during the tenure.

It is very simple. Black genes dominate white genes. Whenever there is a mixed baby, it always comes out black.

Why is it that when a black/mixed-race person commits a crime (say, murder) we're perfectly content to call him black, but when he gets elected President all of a sudden we're concerned about the exact mixture of racial heritage?

Who cares if he's white, black, yellow or purple? Why are we still talking about this crap?
