Christians and Atheists - can we ALL agree...?

...that the Bible got ONE thing right? From 1 Corinthians 1:17-25 ESV

For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart."

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

So, IF the Bible got it right:

- the message of Christ sounds like foolishness to those who don't believe

- the message of Christ is salvation in the minds of those who do believe

- you can't convince someone of its truth or falsehood through logical illustration

So if you haven't figured it out, trying to change one another's mind on the topic of God through a clearly thought-out argument is just folly. Atheists, you aren't going to convert any true Christians that way. Christians, you aren't going to convert any true Atheists that way.

DO YOU AGREE?

    Yes I agree.

But just because logic won't accomplish much doesn't mean I can't share my opinion. That's most of the fun around here.

Yes, very true.. No, massive amount of evidence will EVER convert or sway the mind of a christian.. We argue about each others beliefs and yet nothing results from it..just frustration.. Atheists, no amount of evidence will be enough proof to christians..

and christians..a lack of evidence will not convert an atheist..

but it's fun to see there responses... maybe that's why we do it!

The Greeks heralded an age of enlightened thought, the Christians brought on the dark ages. I'm happy to be categorized alongside the Greeks.

There's nothing wise about reveling in how you believe in nonsense for nonsensical reasons.

Sounds about right, although for those who doubt their religion, it is fairly easy to get them to believe something else. Without even meaning to or knowing how I did it, I somehow 'inspired' one of my jewish friends to not believe in God. So people can be converted if they are unsure. I suppose it's just the ones firmly set in their beliefs that can't be converted, and that's fine.

This all depends on whether or not a person's mind is open or not.

People are converted from one side to the other on a daily basis.

"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise," so true. Bibleists are blind to wisdom and truth.

As to your main point, I couldn't care less about converting Christians I just want to stop Bibleists from destroying education and perverting our children.

I'm not a Christian or an atheist, but I agree with you whole-heartedly. You can't change someone who doesn't want to change.

talking to christians or atheist is folly any way you look at it.

anybody that arrogant that they're right is too much for me!

Yes, but I have an ethic that binds me. Leave no man behind.

  • My conversion to atheism was helped along greatly by other atheists.
