    Facts About Christopher Columbus

First off, Columbus did not "found" America. And by "found" to you mean established or do you mean it in a literal sense? Seriously, what has the American education system become?!

    Anyhow, here are three options:

    1) Columbus was actually looking for a trade route to the West Indies when he landed in the Bahamas (not on main land). He thought he had landed in the West Indies, hence, he named the people there Indians.

    2) He was not the first person to reach the Americas from Europe. Leif Ericson of Greenland had done so 500 years prior.

    3) Many historians claim he also went by the names of Cristoforo Colombo or Cristóbal Colón

Columbus did not "found" America -- neither did he discover it.

Leif Ericsson has a much better claim.

    BTW: Next time ask politely.

    He was Italian.

He was born in 1451 and died in 1506.

His voyages were funded by Queen Isabella of Spain.

Interestingly, it is speculated that he was Jewish or came from Jewish roots.
