REAL mountains: go to Colorado or Lake Tahoe, CA, esp for prettier water (clear blue) .The Rockies are in Colorado & Lake Tahoe is in the Sierra Nevadas.

Mountain or hill? There are hills in the hill country, which is only about 3-4 hours from Houston. If you want mountains, the closest are in the Big Bend Area, which is considerably further. There are large hills/small mountains in Arkansas, which is probably closer to Houston than Big Bend. Just depends on what you're looking for and how big of a mountain you want.

There are no Mountains near Houston. If you want some beautiful lake and hill country, visit the Lake Travis area near Austin.

head up towards the Austin Area and past going West. Houston is in the flat-lands of Texas. No mountains near here unless you watch old Hollywood movies, then they are located between Houston and Beaumont on 1-10
