What was the best weapon ever invented?
As far as rifles and machine guns go, which is the best ones tat were made throughout history?
I think the BAR assault rifle was the best. It fired long distances, but was still an ideal weapon for urban areas. The MG-42 is the best machine gun because it was more accurate on fired at further distances than other machine guns of its time. It was also quieter, and had less of a flash.
Please don't compare rifle like the M16-A2 with a M1 Garand, or anything like that.

Wrong answer. The BAR was introduced, I think in the early 1920s and started being phased out in the mid-1950s for a life span of about 30 years.
There are only two "greatest" weapons if the standard is that the weapon was so good it never went out of style.
1. The M1911 .45 automatic pistol. Although the Army phased it out starting in the late 1980s (there were still some in use as of the Gulf War of 1991) the Marines and Special Operations Forces have started to use it again.
2. The M2 .50 caliber machinegun. It, like the BAR was introduced in the 1920s and it is still in use in Iraq and Afghanistan to this day. I think it is the only weapon in the US inventory to be in use for 80 continuous years. That's what make it the greatest.
OK, so what do the BAR, M1911 and M2 .50 caliber all have in common (aside from the obvious)? All were invented by John Browning - the greatest small arms designer in history.

Have to be the M2 designed originally as a machine gun for use in aircraft in WWI, changed from a hydraulic recoil system to its current configuration in 1932, and still used today on the world most modern vehicles and tanks, and lethal to ranges over 2 miles, with the ability to fire without multiple barrel changes due to its heavy barrel.

The MG-42 is still an outstanding weapon by today's standards. It was found to be superior to newer designs (like the M60) and variants of it are still being produced and used to this day - MG1 and MG3, basically the same weapon chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO rounds.

I was in the Air Force, so speaking from my own experience, I'd say the M-60 machine gun. It was easy to care for, rugged, and could put a lot of lead down range. Rifles, ummm, I'd have to say that's a tough one, M-16's were good, but could be a pest in combat. I've never used a M-1 so I'll just leave it at that.

I have to go outside the box on this one. I think your brain is the best weapon ever created...too bad we don't use it anymore.
