I believe that your husband has not celebrated Christmas not only because his mother passed away, but also because of the Soviet Union system. The government declared Christmas illegal in the whole union, leaving people with only New Year's to celebrate. To this day, my family doesn't not celebrate The Russian Christmas.

But if you wish to, then ask him how he celebrated it as a child. Then you can re-create it. It should bring up great memories.
