John received a vision from God so "Yes, I believe it".
The only people who should be scared by that book are people who have not yet turned from their sins and declared that Jesus is their Lord and Savior since it gives great hope to the people who have.

Here we see that God finally judges the Devil and everyone else.
Revelation 20:10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Here we see what happens when God finally restores the creation and the people who stopped rebelling against Him.
Revelation 21:1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."
5 Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful." 6 And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

I also agree that most of it is metaphorical. I also agree that the popularity of it being a literal prophecy came about with the Left Behind series (which IS classified as fiction, even by the authors). However, decades, if not centuries before, the Left Behind series people were looking for things in daily life to make Revelation relevant-- the advent of chain stores, looking at Hitler and Mussolini as the anti-Christs (I think that was even said about a US President or two or three...), etc.
Even with Daniel it was more about his dreams and what they meant at that time in history, at least according to some of what I've read. i.e., the December issue of "Lutheran Woman Today". NOTE: The Lutheran church does not officially believe that Revelation is prophetic to today's culture. I have looked at that and what pop culture Christianity (my term for things like Left Behind, Rod Parsley, the dude in Texas, and many of the TV preachers, most of whom speak of prophecy and ask for money so God can bless me.) says and have come to my own conclusions.
The world may end in 2012. The world may end today. I'm not scared because I have faith. Besides, I have a 15-month-old daughter and a household to manage. I have to keep things up and going so things can keep going, if the world keeps going. Besides, what is the fun and point of life if I sit around scared?
Early last year, my husband lent me this book, "The Rapture Exposed: The Message of Hope in the Book of Revelation"
by Barbara R. Rossing, which I did not read as it got lost in my pile of stuff to read.
ETA: Lainie gave a good point that I forgot to mention-- The writings were for the church of the time against Rome. It is speculated that the beast if Nero and his numerlogical name/number is 666. It is not anything about Satan, or a current anti-Christ, etc.

Actually, I would reccommend any books on this page: http://www.augsburgfortress.org/store/searchresult... and it might be because I'm a bit biased. - jenLv 61 decade ago
Scared is the last thing to be, Rev.21:8,
John 3:16, 17:3, trust in Jesus.
Revelations is about wars and rumors of ears until, WW1 and WW2 and all it was surrounded by, as nations rise there is conflict [ as Vietnam and others ], when it is of power. Troubles by Euphrates has been there for a while.

The Revelation of John was an example of a genre we now call apocalyptic literature. Like many other writings in that genre, it was a disguised polemic against Rome. The intended audience understood the symbolism, but that understanding is now mostly lost.
It does not describe events that were to happen in the distant future. It was about Rome. Only those completely ignorant of history believe that it describes their own time.

Yes I believe in Revelation as a book of the Bible - but no, I do not accept so much of the uber-literal translation as popularized by the "Left Behind" series. I believe it is a very spiritual, and figurative writing.

What are you doing going to Revelation, the last book? Have you gotten past the first four words of the Bible, and believe them? If so, what are you afraid of? If not, go back do first things first, follow the 2 greatest commandments Jesus Christ tells us in the gospels, be ready for whatever He allows you to endure and stop being scared.
Something tells me you haven't read the instruction manual.

Yes, and Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who read and understand the book of Revelation. Revelation 1:3

Why should we not believe that he did? Rev. 1:1-3 says so. Are your scared that he wrote it or are you scared of what Revelation states?

YES I BELIEVE IT TO BE TRUE.
IF YOU LOOK AT OUR WORLD AT THIS VERY MOMENT, YOU WILL SEE SOME OF THE PLAGUES THAT IS WRITTEN BUT WE WOULD CALL THEM VIRUSES. JUST GONNA GET WORSE. WE ALREADY HAVE HAD HAIL STONES THE SIZE OF GOLF BALLS ETC ETC ETC. THE MARK OF THE BEAST IS COMING OUT ALREADY IN THE FORM OF A CHIP WHICH THEY WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE THAT IT IS TO FIND MEN AND WOMAN THAT GO MISSING IN ACTION. THERE IS A WHOLE LOT OF THINGS IN REVELATION THAT HAVE ALREADY COME TO PASS. BUT YOU NEED NOT BE AFFRAID IF YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS GODS SON. IT SAYS HE SENDS ANGELS TO THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH AND GATHERS HIS ELECT WHICH IS CHOSEN. READ YOUR WORD AND PRAY, GOD WILL GIVE YOU COMFORT THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHICH WILL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS CONCERNING HIS WORD. GOD SAW YOUR HEART AND FELT YOUR TREMBLING WHEN YOU WROTE THIS QUESTION. HE WOULD SAY TO YOU, DRAW NEAR TO ME, AND I WILL DRAW NEAR TO YOU. FEAR NOT FOR I AM WITH YOU. LET HIM THAT THIRST COME TO ME.
REMEMBER, GOD IS NOT WILLING THAT ANYONE SHOULD PERISH. IT IS MAN THAT MAKES THE WRONG DECISIONS AND THEREFORE THEY PERISH AND ARE JUDGED BY GOD.

Most definitly. God says stay on the watch but do not be alarmed. Now is the time to be watching. I have a feeling it is only going to get worse from here. Until the rapture takes place it will be a great day for Gods children. So stay ready.
