IF going to the national parks I would dress with the wool coat. I think in Vegas it might be a bit much. Going from casino to casino you will bake in that coat .. usually a nice warm jacket is better and easier to carry inside.

Coldness is a relative thing. Out here in Vegas, many people consider 80 degrees in September cold. I remember my first year here I was shocked to see people bundled up at 80 degrees. This time of year, it's going to be in the 40's and 50's, so if you are from a cold climate, it might not be too bad for you. Compared to Ohio, this weather isn't bad. I usually wear a semi-heavy winter coat this time of year. However, if you are coming during Christmas, you will probably want a rain coat because the local meteorologists have predicted rain this week, particularly on Christmas day. I would think wool might not be too good in the rain. Good luck and you should definitely check out the Red Rock Casino and Red Rock Canyon. Hope I could help.

It's windy and cold in Vegas, especially at night. You will want to pack your warm coat, but whether you wear it or not depends on your strategy for visiting the various casinos.
We always make use of the valet parking, which means we aren't outside except for a few minutes waiting for the car. We can get by with a light jacket which is nice because it is a pain to lug around a coat (though there is a coat check at some casinos). If you are going to depend on buses, walking, monorail, etc. a heavy, warm coat is required.

If you are going to be outside you will need a coat. So the answer is yes. If for no other time, then when you arriving and going home. But I am sure you will be traveling to all the other hotels, shops, and more.
