Should US auto makers lock out the UAW to save themselves?

This is just speculation, but seems that the UAW is the biggest detriment to US auto companies and need to go away in order to cut costs. I read that 40% of their costs are Union related and by eliminating that they could save themselves and their workers.

100 % get rid of the union. Cut the workers back to a more normal pay scale. the union is worried about one thing at the end of the day...The union big wigs. If i owned a company and the union tried to get their mitts tied up in , I would close the doors. Kudo's to Walmart for having the sack to stand-up when the union tried to organize the meat cutters. More companies should follow suit. If you go in and do your job like you are supposed to there is no need for the union anyway. I would gladly cross a picket line to help do away with a union job.

I believe you read incorrectly. That said, locking out the autoworkers would just make a huge mess. I believe they will have to go into chapter 11 bankruptcy, restructure and cancel the union contracts. They can restart with many of the same work rules but need to change the legacy costs. They also need to discontinue about half of the brands they make - then they have a fighting chance of staying in business.

A little bit of information for some of you youngsters - The extra money that the Big 3 puts into wages (total cost per hour of $70 vs. tcph of $50 for the Japanese competition) is used by the Japanese companies to improve quality and design new products.

the UAW is a political group that keeps taking money from the workers!

The auto makers need to also stop listening to the "Market People" and listen to more alternative-lifestyle folks and make cars that can be fixed ourselves and have less impact on the environment (even in size) and cost about 1/3 of what they do now.

We dont need so much crap in our cars! How many cows die for leather interiors?

Here how to solve everyone's problem:

    1. Fire all union employees

    2. restrict the union from having any part of the auto companies whatsoever in the future.

    3. Hire people in the US who have lost their jobs in the last year in COUNTLESS other industries. They should have no problem performing the unskilled labor as needed.

The new employees will be GREATEFUL to earn $20.00 per hour and be given respectable benefits.

Unions need to be abolished. Period.

that is not true. union is supported by the workers, money is taken out of the employees paycheck to keep the union going. The auto companies do not pay union directly.

I love how people just buy into every negative thing they hear about the big 3. Autoworkers are hardworking americans, they dont make 70/hr, they are not all lazy spoiled whatever you call them, they are good normal people. The bailout was a bad title, it was a LOAN, not free money. The unions have no control over management and how they spend the money. Unions have no control over americans buying foriegn cars and exporting money that should stay in our own country.
