Looking for a decent critique?

Update:

Mere_Mortal: Thank you! That is the one thing I love about that one, her blue eyes really came out...better than the rest of the shot unfortunately.

Drenton: Thank you! Found your critique very useful! I typically do my watermark a lot lighter (I added this one in Photobucket since I forgot to add prior to uploading them!) Good to know that my howling dog is "overdone"...She was just "talkin to me" figured get it. I honestly do a lot of point and click *and pray!* type shooting.

Captsnuf: Thank you very much, I have to say #1 is my "best" piece to date. Still working my way up! Hense looking for all the advise I can get! I actually have very limited training (A high school photo class about 10 years ago). Pic 4 I like, she sat still for that split second that I just sort of aimed and clicked...litterally. She is my most special, and hardest subject! Unfortunatly I aimed a bit high, I can reduce the amount of snow but thats all the dog I got. Thank you very much!

Update 2:

Volleygirl: Thank you! One of my personal favorites

Mywaphel: Thank you! I need someone to "grade me hard" and nitpicky is good it will help me grow. Not gonna get my feathers ruffled! I know 4 is blurry, the camera decided her butt was the focal point, as I have explained she is my most difficult subject and it was a point and click...Will be experimenting tomorrow with laying/kneeling (without getting my camera/lense full of snow of course!) to get some different angles. With my mare, I wanted to capture her raw power vs. her sheer beauty...perhaps that distorts the viewers perspective?

Update 3:

Lidybeff: Thank you! I will most definitely be experimenting with different angles in the very near future.

The first one has a beautiful tonal range, with great contrast and a nice sense of motion (I'm praying that it wasn't added in post though)

The second one. The look on the dog's face is priceless, and those eyes are excellent. However, if you had crouched down and shot it at the dog's eye level (Or even lower), the shot might have had that extra bit of impact. Dakota is a nice name for a dog (I'm assuming that's its name and not the location?)

The third shot is okay, a little over-done, but that's okay because you didn't use a fisheye to do it. A very sweet dog though.

Sadly, the focus is off in an otherwise great shot (Shot number 4).

Oh, as for your watermark, I'd suggest having it done at 25-50% opacity, that's usually soft enough to let you see the image but still strong enough for it to hinder thieves.

I unfortunately only have time for a brief overview, I'll try to remember to come back later for a more in depth critique.

However, overall you have a good eye and should keep with it. One thing I noticed with #1 and #4 is the focus is off. #4 is obvious, but #1, your eye wants to stay on the face, but the focus pulls you to the horse's chest. I don't like that, but I'll be the first to admit I'm being a bit nitpicky about it.

The others are good but as one poster mentioned, a bit stereotypical. Try to get an unusual perspective, something we haven't already seen. I know it's cold, but getting below the dog can make all the difference. Try to show us a side of these dogs we haven't already seen.

    Best of luck

y'know, i clicked on #1 expecting something perhaps amateurish that could use some help with composition and lighting, when i caught my breath i said aloud "o, my Lord...!" that is a beautiful image.

so i looked at the rest, and they are equally well done. so perhaps on #4 you cropped the ears and tail, i'd like to see more of the dog and just as much of the snow...

you know, i think you know what your doing with a camera...i think you've sat through some serious critiques in the past and i think you know where to find some serious critique now. your images reflect the knowledge of a photographer who has had some class time and atleast some amount of formal training.

Yep, they are great, I'd be getting a bit lower.

Also having the subjects' heads almost dead centre detracts a little.

I'd be looking to frame it a little differently.

That being said they are better than I could do. I am just applying theory in my critique.

I'm a dog person, have my own little pack, so of course I adore your images.
