Why did GM stop making the S-10 pickup?

Why did GM fail us by not making anymore small fuel efficient trucks? I might have to consider-heaven forbid the dare I say it, F##D Ranger, since Gm does not seem to offer any small size pickups anymore.

UAW could not get their big salaries to work on anything that small. Had to go to the Colorado.

Only God knows. Remember the Chevy LUV?

Truth is, compact trucks are cool, but not all that economical. I have a 96 4cyl Ranger. Although slow, is much faster than the Rangers from the early 80's, but even new, it only got like 22 mpgs. A small motor has to spin at higher RPMs in order to get anything done.

That's why a 2.3liter, four cylinder, does not get twice as much MPGs as a 5.0liter v-8. Even though the motor is half the size, it only gets 5-10 mpgs better than a larger vehicle with a larger motor.

Actually, very large sedans benefitted from more sophisticated transmissions. My 307, v-8 (5.0 liter) 1987 Chevy wagon got 26 mpgs on the highway!

The Colorado doesn't have a four, but it has a five cyl, which I've heard great things about.

Work vehicles are great with inline motors.(not "v"s) They are much cheaper to fix, and more reliable, due to fewer parts. I would choose an inline four, five, or six, over a V-6 any day. This is probably why they reintroduced the larger inline motor for the GMC Envoy.

All of my work trucks ( 2 F100s, 2 E150s) were straight six (4.9 liter) inline motors. I sold them all when I changed business, but the one E150 had 260,000 original miles on it, and didn't burn oil. It got 20 mpgs, only slightly less than my 2.3 Ranger.

For all the Jap lovers out there...every time you see a work vehicle over 25 years old, it is usually American.

One of the ways the auto industry tries to stimulate sales

is by stopping production on older models and starting

with new ones. Generally they make model changes an

    average of every 5 yrs.

Now the reality is quite often (if you look real close at the

new models they come out with) the changes in the new

from the previous models are very slight. Bumpers, tail lights, headlights, the dash area and seats, etc. The biggest

changes they might make are in safety, engines and other mechanical areas.

If you want a small pick up check out the Japanese models. They are very good. Also consider a used S-10. Prices are very good right now.

The new Colorado model is not very different from the S-10.

Up to the '60s they changed models completely every year.

That was before all the overseas competition started.

As you can see the American auto companies are now having

a difficult time. They stop making good changes.

GM probably stopped because it didn't sell as much as the silverado did. Also, they do make small pickups. There is the Chevy Colorado. :D

    nope..

"Marketing geniuses" at GM (and all other manufacturers" want the new car designs to always be a step ahead of the competition and increase this, or increase that, add more "leg-room" because they think people actually shop for such things.

Notice that the GEO metro (now Chevy AVEO) is bigger and you cannot get the 3 cylinder one anymore???

I agree with you, it sucks.

I just make my own cars.....

the Toyota Tacoma is superior to both Ford Ranger and GM Colorado/Canyon. Drive one and you'll feel the difference.
