Avast wins by a mile because it's real time scanning is hard to beat .

the free version has many features that you will have to pay for in other systems.

it is the only anti-virus system that can scan compressed and archive files .

it scans your downloads as they come in and depending on your settings it is capable of shutting off your download as soon as it spots a virus thus stopping the virus dead in its tracks before it get's near your computer.

i could go on & on it but i think i will stop there.

it is just probably the best free A-V-System in the world.

AVAST is better. I had problems with AVG as it did not work with some firewalls. Run protection on AVAST is also highly modular. So for example if you do not use Internet Messaging, you can turn off IM protection module.

neither. Most FREE anti virus programs only work for like 30 days as a trial. and they don't really have updates regularly as one does when you purchase it. I have used Norton since 2005, it has worked very well.every year they have an updated version and have regular updates on almost a daily basis. these updates are automatic and most of the time i don't even notice them happening. I have never once had a virus nor pop up problems. every once in a while i have a tracking cookie but besides that its worked like a champ. it runs about 40 bucks a year but well worth it...

Antivirus isn't really effective. It's better to have the doors to your house closed and open it for the people you know than to have the doors all open and then have a bouncer at each door with a list of known criminals.

Here's what you should do to secure your computer:

    1. Create a limited user account and always use that account instead of the administrator account

    2. Set your Windows updates to install automatically

    3. Regularly back up your personal files to an external hard drive

    4. Read up on social engineering and how to avoid it

I like McAfee with site advisor. It saves you from opening bad sites.
