I have personal question for you atheists?

It's a question about motive.

Christians have a motive that's obvious to everyone.

I think it's an admirable one.

A straightforward attempt to "save" a soul from eternal separation from it's creator.

A creator who, according to the Bible, has given the Christian the responsibility and very specific directions to accomplish their task.

So my question to you is about your motives.

Any reasonable person can see that there is a real effort by many atheists to "convert".

On a personal note, I am not one who believes that all atheists are mindless or heartless. In fact I think the opposite is true in many cases. You have to have a heart before it can be broken and you have to have a brain to ask questions. Even the apostles who followed Christ were constantly asking him questions. It's very interesting how he handled the situation. He never got upset and shouted them down. He basically put his arm around their shoulder and said, come along and take a walk with me and I'll try to explain.

I was just sitting here looking at some of the QnA over a cup of coffee (Colombian-straight up) and got to wondering about the motivations of the "God deniers". What is the profit in it?

Update:

You want Evidence?

I see the evidence in my grandchildren. That light in their eyes and how life is a great adventure to them. I see it in a newborn colt as it kicks up it's heels and bolts across the pasture only hours after it's birth. I see it in the simple things in life that we overlook. A hot shower and a good home cooked meal. The beauty of nature and music and art and mathematics. Evidence that you really have to work at to miss!

Update 2:

Don't you think it is "fair" to seperate TODAY'S average Christian from TODAY'S radical Muslim fundamentalists or Jihadists? Give me a break here people!

Update 3:

btw..if you get a thumbs down, it's not from me, even you broomstick boy. Lots of hostility in that "answer"?

Update 4:

31 answers so far..most are very interesting. Out of 31 I have not recieved one star? Just something I found interesting.

Update 5:

Hey,thanks for the star Dr.A !

Update 6:

OK so where does the colt's desire to survive come from? I have a million of these.

Update 7:

Giving to charity is very admirable. I never claimed you were not good people. (not sure about broomstick boy)

Update 8:

"What if you told people of the truth and nobody believed you, when you know you are right. Wouldn't that frustrate you?" ( interesting quote from Andrew)

Update 9:

"We just seek to point out the obvious"

(interesting quote from Punky)

Update 10:

I see a reference to the Constitution. Where (in the constitution) is that separation? I believe it only states that the Goverment *can not* establish an Official Church? Correct me if I'm wrong!

Update 11:

"If left unchecked, you people tend to burn "witches" and torture "heretics", let alone fly airplanes into buildings."

Once again..This is not an honest or realistic statement. To compare modern day Christians with terrorists who truly do live in the seventh century is BS and I think you know it is! That is a Distortion of the Truth at best and I would go further and call it a LIE!

Update 12:

"as we have been given this gift, and we have a duty to treat it well."

(interesting quote from Veggie)

Update 13:

"I never see them bashing Muslims."

(interesting..from TIM)

Update 14:

Glee: If I understand you correctly..you are using evidence of the negative things you see in this world to prove that the positive things I see are not evidence of a creator but the negative things are valid evidence that there is no God.

Theres a quote that I heard years ago that applies here.."When you go to court for a crime and you don't like the judge's ruling..that gives you no right to pretend that the judge does not exist"

I'm not going to pretend to understand the horrible things that happen in this world, especially to the innocent (including 520,000,000 abortions in the last 40yrs or so) and I, like you, have many questions but to me the evidence of a creator is overwhelming even if we don't understand the character of God..

Update 15:

LET me make one thing crystal clear!

I will Never defend truly Evil acts by any Church or individual! There should be no hiding place for evil in a Church or in a Planned Parenthood office or an Abortion Clinic!

Update 17:

Dr. Awkward, O'le Foolosopher, Sasha..Thanks for cleariing some things up!

Update 18:

Thank you Sandy.

wasting your breath bro... I get your point.

w/ exception to a few open minded folks here:

The other haters don't care what you think or say and can only see things from their point of view. Those who see all religion and religious people as ignorant dangerous troublemakers don't have a clue. Who wants an eternity with haters anyway? There's a special place reserved just for them. They will all be at home together. Their own little paradise.

Do what you want. Deny him now, he'll deny you then.

I'm not like some...you make your bed hard. Lay in it.

You're aware of your options. You're not stupid, make your choice.

I keep seeing ignorant remarks like Christians are responsible for war. Which war is that...since...let's say the Crusades? I could even argue that one. But I'll give it to you.

This war? nope sorry it's about oil

the last one? nope same thing

    vietnam? politics

    korea? same thing

    ww2..nope

    ww1.. nope

    spanish american? nope

    US civil? nope

    US v Mexico? no

    texas revolution? nope

    1812? no

US revolutionary? nope So in the last two hundered and fifty years anyway. All wars have generally been politically motivated by governments and men in power due to their greed and lust for power, wealth and property. Revolutions are also often driven by socioeconomic strife and poverty.

But few IF any modern wars are the result of Christian aggression. Just because a soldier may be religious doesn't make it a religious war. I could make that argument against atheists for that matter. Look at the history of nations who have/had power that were atheistic? The destruction that atheistic scientists have unleashed on humanity?

Most of the biographical info. (prior to the revolt) about Spartacus is controversial at best. He lead a MAJOR revolt of thousands (140K) of slaves against Rome and 6-7K (as many as 10K)of them were crucified along the roadside.

Kinda hard to write that completely outta the books wouldn't ya say? Jesus was nowhere near the controversial revolutionist as Spartacus. Yet HE (Jesus) was left out or removed from any and/or all records. Is that possible?

Several Egyptian Pharoahs were actually erased from history...in a vigilant record keeping civilization.

    Yeah, it can be done.

Source(s): god-less behavior is not proof of a God-less Universe Absence of (scientific) evidence, isn't evidence of (God's) absence. God exists for those who exist for him.

I can see a problem with both the religious and the atheist alike as they both try to push their agenda upon others.

Religion is the idea of conversion to, as some put it, control, while if atheism is not a religion, why make the attempt to convert another to your belief?

The religious at least offer a reward for conversion but the atheist has no such gift. In my mind, it is no wonder that there are so many religious people, simply because of the reward.

Now imagine the reward the Muslim and what they offer their martyrs, 72 virgins! If I were a sex addict, I would surely become a Muslim!

The Christian religion offers eternal life in a city with streets of pure gold, a harp and a crown. What do the atheist offer me?

A hole in the ground, dirt thrown in my face and maybe after 100 years someone might remember my name. I believe that atheists should try to come up with more to offer if they want to convince others to change. I believe the same about most religions, because I don't really care for harp music either and a crown would look weird on top of my ball cap.

I am pantheist, and believe that all of nature is god. It offers life if we know what to use and death if we eat the wrong thing. It can heal, educate, entertain and sustain one.

I have never heard your god or non-god say a word, but I have heard nature call.

Atheists aren't trying to do anything, L.T.M. Atheism is simply the belief that there is no god of life after this life. Unfortunately, however, there's a lot of people in the world that believe in shoving there beliefs down people's throats. That kind of person exists in every culture and religion.

I don't think you were trying to shove your religion down the Yahoo community's throats, but you are acting very rude and passive aggressive, which will not help you get your point across.

I find beauty in all of those things, too. In a hot shower, a good home cooked meal, nature, music, and mathematics (even though I suck at it!). I simply have a different opinion than you do on the origins of this magnificent world and it's infinite beauty. I respect your opinion, L.T.M., and I respect everyone else's beliefs and opinions. All I ask in return is the same respect.

The key to world peace is respect, open-mindedness and kindness. Thank you for hearing me out. :)

I am Agnostic. Wasn't always this way. Saw how churches were for some, a front. A fashion show, and a gossip post. The ones that I befriended. Only did things that would benefit them. I do believe in XMAS, Easter and all traditions. I feel that religion should be left out of politics! Period. On the History Channel last night. They had a piece on how so many scriptures were kept out of the Bible. Jubilees. Was one of them. Had a lot about incest. So, they decided that they should leave that out of the Bible. Why? That did happen to populate people. Was the only choice they had. I can understand that. So many religions have mis interpreted the Bible for their needs and beliefs. Then came the modern Bible. Did it ever leave out some of the most crucial parts of the Real Bible. Just like Golf, there is no solution to the game. Most Christians seem to not accept a lot of others if they don't fit the same criteria. Most Christians seem to turn their backs on their own family. Knowing they need money, or other material's. I have seen this so much over a few years. My neighbor is a Christian. Soon as he gets home, he is rolling a joint! That is his prerogative. And is a hypocrite. Some Christians beat their wives and their kids. I have noticed more family friendly non Christians, or should I say: People who do believe in God, but don't have to go to a church with sheep to know him. There are some good churches out there. But not here in CA. Is why I believe in many spirits. When we die we are born again in the same line. I do believe in my heart and soul. But if you read the one part in the Bible. It states don't build temples around me. I take it that is churches.

Forgot this, when you go to college and major in Physics, you must learn of all religions. That is when you start to realize the differences in them. Muslim religion is a ruthless one. There is no good about Muslim religion. This is why I changed my point of views towards religion.

What I can say to this is, Atheists act like a non-belief in God is a Religion, but they don't believe in anything but the nonexistence of a higher-being, a Creator.

Atheists, in my opinion, don't make much sense, especially atheist scientists, because they are always seeking the beginning of life, but believe there is no after-life, and refuse to search for one.

Common sense, and life around us tells us there is a beginning, and an end.

Something created everything, and it doesn't make sense that the Creator would destroy it, especially if it loves. Atheists claim to love, do they not? So God, or the creator must love as well, since He (or it) created love, and emotions. The destructtion (or final death, no after-life) of humanity from a loving Being, is purely idiotic.

I figure if God wants them, He will show them the way, eventually, in His time. Not mine.

Any successful gambler will tell you you have to be optimistic if you expect to win. Atheists seem to be pessimists, and Christians optimists. I would rather live a good Christian life believing in the promise of eternal life with my creator and be wrong, than live my life expecting nothing but a cold grave and be wrong only to find out the Christians were right all along. Bet on a losing philosophy? No thanks.

If I'm wrong and there's nothing but an end and cold blackness, no big deal. If atheists are wrong and death and afterlife is as described in the Bible then REALLY big deal!

The things you pointed out as evidence for god are simply natural things that make you feel good. That is more than a little primitive and ignorant. Does Ebola Virus count as evidence? What about Malaria killing thousands of babies every year? What about children dying of AIDS in Africa. What about colts born deformed or dead? Ever seen a crocodile eat a baby zebra? That is nature too. What about having no access to clean warm water? Most of the world can never take a hot shower. Those things you mentioned are subjective. They are nice. They are not evidence of any god.

Disagreeing with you is not attempting to convert you. But where I see misconceptions, illogic and often outright lies, is it not my moral obligation to correct them? If I light a candle in this darkness of superstition, selfish desires, needless social control and wish fulfillment scams that are religion what payoff do I need? Altruism is doing the right thing, because it is the right thing, not because you get something from it.

I'm telling you there is no Santa, no monster under your bed and no god, because it is the truth. That is all.

  • As a former Atheist, I can only speak for myself. I firmly believed that I was the ruler of MY universe and I was not going to let something else tell me different. I never tried to push my unbelief on anyone because I was too busy with myself and good time to even care. I always was connected to nature, especially big old trees and I could see the beauty and wisdom in creation. I just didn't want to change they way I lived. Until died. That changed everything. Best thing that ever happened to me. It saved my soul. Thank you Lord.

I posted a question on here and asked how many Atheists were converted by other Atheists. Out of the 30 or so answers I received. Not one person was converted by anyone else. Each came to that belief on their own terms and through natural thought processes. Myself included. I know that it is only 30 odd people, but it was interesting. We don't seek to convert. We're just pointing out the obvious, which is, that you've been socialized into believing nonsense and the world has had enough. The Atheist movement is snowballing for a reason. A shift in a collective consciousness is here. Deal with it.

Edit: And I hardly think that fear mongering for the sake of converting someone is in anyway "admirable". For you to think that you need to save somebody, because they don't believe what you do, actually makes me sick. Take a good hard look at yourself.

Some Atheists may be motivated to try to "talk sense" into Christians because they can't understand how anyone could actually believe in God and especially Creationism and other stories in the Bible etc.

However, most Atheists have no interest in "converting" Christians. I for one, think that religion has done alot of good for society and has provided comfort to those who lose loved ones. I can see why people would want to have faith in a higher power. At the same time, I don't believe myself, and frankly I can't believe because I don't know, no one knows, and therefore there is no more reason for me to believe in one god over another (for example, a Christian God vs. multiple gods vs. mystical fairies). To me, they are all just stories created by people to provide "answers" to questions that science has not, and may never answer.

BUT, the point is that most Atheists only start to get on the offense when religious groups try to impose their beliefs on the greater society. So I think the answer to your question is that the Atheists' "motive" (as you put it) is to actually enforce (or at least support) the Constitution and separation of church & state. It is only when Christians advocate teaching creationism (which is RELIGIOUS education) in public schools, or when they cite the Bible in order to try to ban gay marriage etc...This is when Atheists start to go on the offense because religion has no place in Legislation.
