Why does my computer shut itself off randomly?

My computer will shut itself off randomly. It started about a year ago, shut down continously for a while, then quit doing it. It is now doing it again. I have an emachine that I bought about 5 years ago, maybe 4 years. I have Windows XP. I do not know much about computers at all. I am getting my BS online and if my computer continues to shutdown I am going to panic. It will go through the process of shutting, it will give me the option when I am using firefox to save and quit, it will not shut down until I click an answer, then the info that says Windows is shutting down, then the shut down sound, then it is completely shut down. I have made sure that i have it in an area where air circulates well. I have defraged the computer, I have ran my anti-virus protection & the report on that was that all components are working properly with no problems. I am at a loss and cannot afford to have somebody look at it. Any suggestions or similar experiences would be great.

The very first thing I would do is open up the computer and see if it needs to be cleaned out. (Not saying it will fix the problem, but I fixed my brother's laptop by simply cleaning out the cooling fins with a can of air duster and a vacuum.)

Next, I would try to restore the system from scratch. First backup all the info you want to save. Then re-install XP.

Aside from that, you can get a decent new computer for about $400-$500 from various retailers. That might be your best option.

next time it shuts off, (very heavily) positioned your hand on the CPU warmth sink. concepts-set it heavily, because of the fact it may be warm adequate to enhance a blister. whether it fairly is, you have your offender. whether it fairly is a undesirable CPU, loss of accomplishing paste, an intermittent fan ... you will could desire to verify. yet shutting off at a number of durations and each now and then no longer coming returned for a on an identical time as is a demonstration of CPU overheat.
