I think Judas is wrongly vilified.

  • Hi John - thanks for your question.

I have not come across a "gospel of Judas," yet, that doesn't prove that one does or doesn't exist, but, I personally have not read a copy.

With the Lord there is plenteous mercy and redemption (Psalm 130) and He is willing to forgive any sin and ALL unrighteousness (1 John 1).

However, Judas passed the limits of God's forbearance when He had a chance to repent of what he did to Christ, but, his chance came and went. The Bible record is fairly clear that Judas will not be in God's eternal kingdom. Even though only God knows what Judas' last thoughts were before he hung himself, yet, he was only sorry that he got caught; he wasn't sorry for the sin itself. That's where he and Peter were different and had different outcomes. Peter was truly sorry for his sin, and was broken; Judas was only sorry of the consequences of his sin, but not for the sin itself.

As far as Judas being "damned to hell," Biblically speaking, that just means Judas is in the grave awaiting the more than likely, second resurrection (Rev 20).

According to the Bible, "hell" just means "death and the grave." When you hear someone say, "go to hell," or "damned to hell," Biblically, it means they are going to the grave.

I hope this gives you more to consider. Take care.

It's not a question of belief... It wasn't actually written by Judas, but there are in fact copies of a Gospel under that name.

Who could do anything worse? Judas handed over the Son of God to be killed.

I think that when Jesus died he went to hell and preached the gospel to all who wanted to listen. SO Judas must have been there. I think that he got out of hell and is in heaven with Jesus.

I have always felt sorry for Judas, what a role in life to have to play.:(

Of course there is a "Gospel According to Judas". i regret that the version translated had received so much damage over the years so that we have so many lacunae in it.

Do i believe it is accurate & true?

Not really. i don't believe it was really written by Judas Iscariot. i treat most of the Old Gnostic mythology like i do Greek mythology. It's intricately *fascinating*. i *enjoy* trying to understand what it supposedly *means*, & do re-read a number of those ancient Gnostic scriptures.

i think "The Apocryphon of John," "On The Origin of the World" & "The Hypostasis of the Archons" are more interesting (among others that i don't really give much credence to).

Irenaeus, in his Against Heresies, wrote the following:

    Chapter XXXI.—Doctrines of the Cainites.

    1. Others again declare that Cain derived his being from the Power above, and acknowledge that Esau, Korah, the Sodomites, and all such persons, are related to themselves. On this account, they add, they have been assailed by the Creator, yet no one of them has suffered injury. For Sophia was in the habit of carrying off that which belonged to her from them to herself. They declare that Judas the traitor was thoroughly acquainted with these things, and that he alone, knowing the truth as no others did, accomplished the mystery of the betrayal; by him all things, both earthly and heavenly, were thus thrown into confusion. They produce a fictitious history of this kind, which they style the Gospel of Judas.

There is another book attributed to Judas (written by some pious Roman Catholic -- maybe around the 7th century CE) that i read, on-line, years ago. That one was basically Judas's "woe is me" repentances for what he'd done.

Of course Judas can be forgiven. The same thing would've happened to Jesus *without* Judas -- if Jesus had remained on that Jerusalem Scene. It's just a matter of when he would've been apprehended by the Authorities. People who believe he could *never* be forgiven only reveal how far-removed they are from having a truly *loving* heart like Yeshua did. The very fact that Judas hung himself reveals that he hated what he'd done.

i agree -- we *do* have many who have done worse... Josef Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Adolph Hitler, Genghis Khan, Saddam Hussein, for starters. Even America has! Jesus said, "Even as you have done unto the least of these, so you have done unto me." That means *every* child our weapons *kill* in Iraq, they are guilty of killing *Jesus*. American soldiers (& soldiers of all other countries, too) have "killed Jesus" -- in *effect* -- with *every* child they've killed! That's just "collateral damage," isn't it -- killing Jesus 10,000... 100,000 times!

i have no real doubt but that Judas Iscariot is reincarnate, *now* -- on this planet. At least one fellow (about 66 years old, right now) *believes* he is the reincarnation of Judas -- & answered some of my Questions, beginning in August 2002. & he's *serving* Jesus with serious dedication. He gave up *everything* he owned -- to "hit the road" for *Jesus* (for about 10 years). He was a millionaire *lawyer*!

Now how many Christians do *you* know who have actually *practiced* Jesus's teaching to sell *everything* they own -- give the proceeds to the poor, & devote the rest of their life to spreading the gospel?

When he'd go on-line, it was at a public *library* computer -- for he certainly didn't have one of his own! He lived with the homeless in Florida.

i can understand why people would believe they're the reincarnation of Cleopatra, Nefertiti, even Mary Magdalene. There's a lot of "glamor" to believing you were *those* people (tho Magdalene's *real* life BackThen was everything *but* glamorous, once she was loving Jesus, & in the years after the crucifixion).

But i can't imagine why *anyone* would claim to be Judas Iscariot, unless they *thoroughly* believed they were! What a heavy karma to be carrying!.

Yes there is a "Gospel" of Judas. Was it written by him? No.

Why is it that it's easier to believe the latest History Channel "Discovery" than to believe the actual Word of God?
