do birth control pills contain synthetic hormones? ortho novum?

Just wondering because synthetic hormones can cause elevated liver enzymes (which i had). My liver enzymes went back to normal after a week of not taking the pills, but I can't be sure that was the reason. It would help to know if the pills had synthetic hormones. My eczema also went away after i stopped taking the pills. I think skin eruptions are usually indicative of liver probs.

    Hi Sufi

Yes, birth control pills, including Ortho Novum, often contain synthetic hormones.

Here is a study which found the side effects you describe in women who used Ortho Novum and found that these effects subsided after discontinuation.

    I hope that helps some!

Ortho Novum contains ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic estradiol, and norethindrone, a synthetic progestin. Most birth control pills contain synthetic hormones, as they are easier to mass-produce and deliver at a predictable and stable dosage.

I've never heard of hormones causing elevated liver enzymes. You may have had an infection of some type, gallstones, or it could have been a side effect of another medication, including many herbal supplements.
