Most people that use Linux that I know use Ubuntu... however I have tried Linux Mint which was nice. You can always burn a Live CD and try out Linux without needing to install it. This is great for making your decisions on which you prefer.

Hi,
You can download ubuntu. It is a free open source debian linux system with user interface. The installation of the operating system is also very straight forward.
It can be downloadable @ www.ubuntu.com. You can download the bootable ISO and burn it into CD and run from the CD.
Remember get the desktop edition. Current version of ubuntu is 8.10
Hope it helps
Regards,
Kevin Soh

I've been using OpenSuse for a couple of years now. It does have a detailed installation process - you have to choose a lot of things - but it is the most windows-like when you choose to use KDE for your window manager. And I have yet to find something I can't do in Linux that I can do in Windows (except print to an old printer that won't release newer drivers for Windows, much less for Linux).

Ubuntu is currently the easiest to use distro, and i recommend it for that reason.
"Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more."
