Seriously...what happens when a female dog goes into heat?

Despite hearing horror stories, I couldn't bring myslef to spay my dog yet, and she's right at 6 months. (She was born 6/21/08). I'm just wondering what is supposed to happen when she goes into heat. So far she has gotten a little lazier (but that might be because it's winter and because it gets dark sooner she doesn't get out as much as before). I did notice her "cleaning herslef" more, and when we went walking she either peed or "marked" twice in front of a certain fence, knowing there was another dog on the other side of it. But other than that she's still sweet. There's been no barking or howling or messes. She's hyper and excited by nature, but also good and obediant. Will that change?

What you are seeing may be signs she is thinking of going into heat.

The actual heat cycle usually lasts approximately 3 weeks. Her vulva will swell dramatically, sometimes up to 4 or 5 times the normal size, and will be floppy. For most dogs, the first and third week, they bleed vaginally. A lot. When she shakes, she will spray blood spots all over your house, unless you put her into panties and change them frequently. The second week she will still have a discharge, but it will not usually be bloody, it will be more straw coloured.

She will be more flirty, may start humping other dogs and your leg. You can't let her out even in your own yard unless you are there with her, as the instinct to breed will make her jump fences and dig out. Even if SHE doesn't, other dogs will try to get to her and will hang around.

Even neutered dogs will try to breed her if allowed near her.

She will howl and carry on if she senses there are any other dogs near her.

It really is a PITA to allow her to go into heat. If I didn't show dogs I would have every one of mine spayed.

The heat, or estrus, cycle in a b*tch lasts about 3 weeks. There will be a discharge, which may be clear, or bloody, or what has been described as murky, depending upon the dog and the point in the cycle. Her vulva will become engorged, and may appear darker in color. The middle week is the most likely time for her to be receptive to males and become pregnant, although it can happen at other points in the cycle. It sounds like your three weeks is just underway. By all means keep her confined and away from male dogs. You can find a number of home veterinary handbooks, which will explain it in more detail. Once she is over this cycle, spaying is highly recommended. You won't have to deal with it again, and it will prevent an unexpected litter of puppies.

Wow, some of these answers are a bit harsh. The questioner didn't say she wouldn't EVER spay her dog, or that she was planning on breeding her... she may just want her to be a bit older and better able to handle the anesthesia.

Check her for blood with a white tissue. When she starts to bleed don't let her out of your sight outside, not even for a minute. It should last about 3 weeks.

And FYI-- Peta doesn't want people to have any companion animals, eat meat, eggs or milk. Anyone using this as a reference must not want you to have pets period.

You will see drops of blood that will go amber and clear. Some dogs are neater than others, some need pads. Her temperament may not change much. You will only know you are in trouble when you find her with a male dog attached to her and both of them looking rather sheepish.

Dogs will usually bleed when they are in heat. And if you got her spayed she might be a little touchy for a little while, but only because she might feel uncomfortable with it. She will still be loving and so on.

Yes, it sounds like she is in heat. This means after she is out of heat you need to get her spayed. Also during heat, keep her away from any intact males. She can and will get pregnant, resulting in more dogs in shelters. Please be responsible and get her spayed ASAP!

Maybe nothing, except some blood :/ Some dogs act different and run around acting crazy, some bark, but some just bleed. My friends dog bleeds and immediately licks her butt clean. Gross. I def wouldn't let her give you kisses :/
