If Dolphins when and Pats win - why do Dolphins win AFC East?
New England beat the Dolphins once and the Dolphins beat New England once. Why do I keep reading that the Dolphins win the division if Pats and Dolphins prevail this weekend? Seems to me it's a tie since they both would have the same record. Or is it the record within the conference that would be the tie breaker?

The rules were changed a few years back. The common opponent tiebreaker was moved ahead of the Conference record tiebreaker.
TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION
If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.
Two Clubs
Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Strength of victory.
Strength of schedule.
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best net points in common games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.

If the Dolphins beat the Jets, they win the division, no matter what New England does. If the Dolphins lose, they miss the playoffs. If the Jets beat the Dolphins, they would still need the Patriots or Ravens to lose in order to make the playoffs.

Dolphins have the tie breakers in their favor. New england needs some miracles to get into the post season.

there are tiebreakers to look at. and since dolphins have the better conference record they get the championship title. the first tiebreaker is head to head and since thats a tie they look at better division record which is also a tie. then they look at conference record which goes to the dolphins

first of all the Jets do have been given a QB Mark Sanchez in they have been given a excilent protection in they'll win the branch with a 12-4 or 13-3 checklist dont forget final 365 days that they had the Divsion yet Farve arm became injured on the top of the season.

the tie breaker is the better conference record, not divisional.......its overall conference!
