The first verse is about a guy, and he's going though a rough time. (The soldier thing) But the whole time he's thinking about laying down with his girlfriend/lover/wife/significant other.

In the second verse, Im guessing the girlfriend dumped him. But he's willing to build a wall around the town, if it'll keep her near him. But it didnt work, because his efforts collaped because angels tore it down.

The third verse is kind of hard to understand, but I'll take a stab at it. Im assuming he cheated on his girlfriend, and women cheated on they're husbands. Then the girlfriend got really mad about it, but decided to stay with him, and they take lots of risks.

And I think the courus is where he realizes that he's doing more harm to her then he should. So he breaks up with her.

  • Yes, the first verse describes a soldier, but the critical part is "save lay my rifle down" because this is really about a relationship that devolves into arguing. Or someone who The whole song uses allegory to portray ways that love and relationships can fail.

The second story is about manipulating your partner in order to hold on to them. Being clingy and going to great lengths to hold on and keep that person locked to you. It falls apart in the end and they are "free to go."

The last situation is about not being able to have a real relationship. This person is jumping from one person to another or choosing partners that are doomed to fail. He or she has trouble making deep, lasting connections and lives on the edge.

I m sure we could analyze this a lot further. We seem to all agree that it s a brilliant song!
