What happens to a dog who was bought at a petstore if you return him because of a defect?

1) The defect is not life-threatening.

2) I'm assuming they send the dog back to the broker, but then what does the broker do with it?

Update:

Actually, the defect isn't medical.. it's that this dog was sold to me as a purebred, but I'm starting not to think he is.

Yes, he had papers, and the papers did check out, but he's not developing correctly for the breed he is supposed to be. Everyone I run into thinks he either is a mix or is of another breed.

You should keep the dog even though it has a defect. It over looks your defects and will love you if you will pet and feed it.

Depends on the pet store as to what they do.

Puppies from pet stores often come from puppy mills. The puppy mill will not be interested in having the dog back, and you don't know they wouldn't just drown it if they did have it back.

You'll have to ask the shop what they will do. If they're decent people, they might pay/contribute towards the vet bills.

Don't support the puppy mill industry by buying from pet stores.

The put it back out in the display case and try to sell it to someone who won't notice the "defect".

The puppy mill doesn't want the dog back.

They try and resell him. If they can't they would prolly kill it.

you shouldnt buy a dog from a petshop as they come from 'puppy mills' and you have no idea what the health of the dog is. you should always get a dog from a reputable breeder or shelter

they just resell to the next person.
