Why can't you just say Merry Christmas?
I have to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. If I know someone is jewish I don't say Happy Holidays, I say Happy Chanuka. Is everyone so lazy they can't just say the right holiday associated with that religion?
To Ballet chances are you are saying happy holidays to someone you know not a complete stranger, thats how you would know what they celebrate

I feel the same way. If I know someone celebrates Christmas I say merry christmas. If they're Jewish than I say Happy Chanukah. BUt if I don't know (like at work) during the month of dec. I just say Happy Holidays cuz to me it covers everything, including new years's, etc. Many holidays in dec. so I can say it all at once. On Christmas itself though, and christmas eve like today, i just say merry christmas, cuz even if someone isn't catholic they should still appreciate and respect the day our Lord was born on. So in general, I do the happy holidays thing, but on christmas, its merry christmas, no exceptions.

I know right? I hate going shopping this time of year now! All you hear is "Happy Holidays". People should say Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or something. But I guess they figure its better, I don't know why. I still say Merry Christmas to those bastards though.
So Merry Christmas or if you're Jewish...Happy Hanukkah!
O yeah, and Happy New Year's!

I never really understood that but I think its because they are worried that people will say the wrong holiday for someone. But really it shouldnt be taken to extreme like banning merry christmas and happy chanuka in schools and workplaces. Thats taking it wayyy too far.

This is getting ridiculous. We celebrate Christmas in America, everyone who lives here knows that. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, what the heck is so offensive about someone saying Merry Christmas to you? Sheesh!

How are you being lazy by not saying the exact one. If you were lazy you would not say anything at all.

i think alot of people just assume everyone celebrates christmas.
i think it's nice of the people who say "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas" to be politically correct and not to be rude.

I just combined as many as possible and now I wish people "Happy Christmakwanzakah". Drives some folks in my area (the deep deep south) nuts, but since I am now as old as Time itself, I get a huge kick out of their reactions. LOL!

I think they say 'Happy Holidays!' because when you are at stores or something, they don't know your religion.
