How to start an exercise regime?
I have a new elliptical exercise machine and I serious about using it. It's not so much for the weight loss benefit, but because I am in a deep blue funk right now and the only way I know that will lift my depression without drugs is regular exercise. The weight loss will just be an added perk.
Anyway, the question is, how do I establish a regular routine that I can stick with. Right now I am really out of shape and 5-7 minutes is the most I can do at a stretch. I was thinking that if I did 7 minutes at a time 5 times a day that would build up my endurance so I can do longer spans. My goal is to get up to doing 45-60 minutes a day. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Congratulation on the weight loss goal for 2009.
Exercise is additive - so doing shorter intervals of exercise like you've already suggested is a good way to start off and build your endurance. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, if you workout 5 times a day for 5 minutes, that would be similar to a 25 minute workout for the number of total calories burned.

John M has pretty much everything I can think to say, but one more thing is worth mentioning.
Your brain will recognize a pattern if you repeat it often enough. I've always been told (by teachers and athletes) that if you do it for 2 weeks, it becomes a habit--so it's harder to break.
Also, start on a Monday...that'll help you identify with a more consistent pattern (unless you have a non-conventional work schedule to deal with).

I think Jessy gave a good answer. You did a good job as far as devising a plan and setting long term goals for yourself.
