why is my car coasting whileI am driving?

I have a 93 Pontiac Bonneville. I have had this problem before where I would be driving, then all of a sudden, when I am pressing the gas, it would slow up and then the when trying to press on the brakes, they are hard and I can't press down then the car cuts off. A few minutes later, the car started up with no problems. Any ideas on what could make the car do this? Serious replies only and thanks!

Update:

Also, my car would be shuddering/shaking when I would be at a complete stop.

The reason the cars slows when you give it gas is the same reason the brakes are hard- it has already died out, you just didn't know it yet. You probably need a tune-up or a gas filter.

It seems like a sensor to me.
