What is the significance of Abram and Sarai becoming Abraham and Sarah?
In the Christian creation myth in the book of Genesis, the biblical god has Abram change his name to Abraham, and his wife Sarai's name to Sarah. What is the reason for this? Is there some difference in meaning in these names?
jon_henryviii, I'm aware that the Abraham myth is much older than Christianity. But since Christians believe in it, and since there are far more Christians here than Jews, I'm more interested in Christians' answers to the question. Thank you for not answering my question at all.

Gd changed their names when they reached a change point in their lives.
It wasn´t a voluntary thing, and signified the change. (can't remember what it was).
And, just to be accurate, here, it's the JEWISH HISTORY...not a creation myth.
The creation myth is HOW GD CREATED THE WORLD. Not a story about Abraham.

In the Jewish culture, a lot of meaning was given to the name of a person, almost defining their character.
"Abram" means "exhalted father", whereas "Abraham" means "father of many",. therefore confirming the promise that God gave him of blessing him and his many descendants.
"Sarai" means "my princess", but "Sarah" means simply "Princess", indicating that she will be exhalted, not only by her husband but by all Nations.
