As a host parent of 14 kids, some of my favorite gifts have been picture books of their part of the world and handcrafted items unique to their countries. Sometimes the books are in English, sometimes in their native languages. The nice thing, so much here (in the US) is in Spanish that you might be able to find one in Spanish to take -- or at least a mullti=lingual book.
Other good choices include cookbooks, t-shirts or hoodies of local sports teams/schools for teens, and an American Monopoly game if there are younger children. They get a kick out of it because they can usually play it -- but the board is different enough to be fun. You may have to translate the cards for them.
have fun!

I would recommend something totally from your country/state... I'm from California and when I went abroad I knew the host family had a daughter my age who liked surfing so I bought her a surfboard with a picture of the pier on it.
Something like that, but just make sure its not too personal.
Hope that helps & have fun in Chile!

Chile is known for it's wines, hot teas and salted dry meats. Is there any famous regional wine made in your region? You'll probably be able to take it to Chile since it's just 1 bottle, they will probably enjoy it.
If your region is famous for it's maple syrup, you could bring that. Mexicans have no idea what real maple syrup tastes like yet pancakes are very common here for breakfast.
Bear in mind that Chile is a very socially conservative country. Don't be abusing those short shorts and thongs. I'd still enjoy visiting it, it seems like a cool country.

Anything that represents your home. Tee shirts/sweat shirts/baseball caps from local teams...professional and college, especially, are usually popular. Hand crafts from home. There are stores that sell things made by local people in most towns. Something uniquely American, like some sort of food from your region (check with the import laws, and what is okay to take across borders).
