Why do some people call themselves Christians when they are not?

We have a man who is the manager of the complex we live and he calls himself a born again Christian. I have known him for 2 or 3 years but just recently really got to know him like over this last year.

He attends church not ever Sunday but most Sunday's and even wanted to take me down with him. I declined, even though I consider myself a God Fearing person, I am not associated with any certain Church because I just don't see the need to congregate with others one day a week as this fellow does.

Now, my question is this. This guy calls himself a Christian but he is not a man of his word at all. He makes promises to people in the complex and simply doesn't follow through. As manager of the complex, he is very Un professional in that he spreads stories about the tenants who live here. Also, he never helps anyone out, even advice wise regarding the complex here or practically anything else. He makes up rules to benefit himself and to cause hardship to the people who live here. If a tenant has a problem ie: with the cold weather, one tenants water froze up, he simply laughs, tells other tenants and offers no help or advise on what to do about it.

Also, he is the type that if he does offer you anything like some help around your home, he only does it because he wants something in return.

Fortunately enough, I do not need his help as I am pretty handy myself. I am not saying that Christians cannot make mistakes but I do have to say that I feel I am more of a Christian than he is. Why do people like this hide behind religion but do as they please?

They do so because it is a convenient way to get the benefit of the doubt from strangers who are influenced by such labels.

As a general rule, I am highly suspect of anyone who wants to make sure everyone sees what label they are wearing and I'm am usually spot on in assessing their character as time passes.

I'm sorry but that man seems like a hypocrite, which we do find in all areas of life. Some people make their beliefs what they want them to be and they don't worry about what impression they make on the world. But we are told not to be a stumbling block to the world or even other Christians. He evidently doesn't look at what testimony he is giving to others, but only he will be responsible for his actions. We as Christians need to realize that people do watch us, and we need to live what we preach. Maybe you should point his behavior out to him, so he can really think about what he is leaving with other people. But until he is convicted of this himself, he probably won't change it. Just pray for God to show him how he is acting and that it isn't right.

I dont know him personly so I am reluctant to call him a hypocrite, however a person that is truly saved, though inperfect should steel help outhers. As for not feeling the need to congregate, it is true that you dont need church to get saved or stay saved however it does give you streanth to handle problems in this world. Scripture says " forsake not the gathering togeather of the saints" it says this so we will not grow week and fall.

  • Christians are truly known by their hearts. This is something only God and the individual knows for sure. We must allow God to work within each heart in His own time.

I just answered a question re: Christianity in which I stated that if Christianity were really what Christ taught there wouldn't be so many people leaving it with bad tastes in their mouths due to the overwhelming hypocrisy.

Umm... do I need to add to that?

Just because you found one bad apple in the bushel does not mean that all the other apples are bad too.

He will have to deal with God one day for his actions.

In the meantime........God asks us to follow Him..........not follow other people. For this specific reason.

People have a deceiving nature, no matter what religions one claims to follow.

Honestly, some people just don't realise what being a christian really means.

I have met people over the years who seriously don't qualify to be christian, yet call themselves that.

Jesus said to pray in private.

Anyone who goes about proclaiming what a Christian they are is usually trying to make up for something.

A real Christian wouldn't need to advertise.

    I agree with your assessment.

He probably flaunts his religious beliefs because in his heart

he has grave doubts about his own value;so,

he has adopted these values to hide behind.

There are an awfully large number of people who claim to

be christian, but don't walk their talk.

Some people who believe in God call themselves Christians...

But even the devil believes in God..

There's more to being a Christian than that.

Many people are just fooling themselves.
