Civil War name badges help?

My grandfather gave me a very special gift for Christmas. He found a name badge that belonged to my great-great-great grandfather when he was in the 43rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. I have searched online to see how much it actually would be worth but have found nothing. I would never sell it because of it's sentimental value, but curiosity has me wondering just how much it would go for. Does anyone know a website where I can find this information?

Update:

ifoyo-I think they are recognized as much as WWII or any other veterans. They just aren't as widely aknowledged because they aren't alive anymore. And I never intended to sell it...did you miss that part of my question? I am just curious as to how rare it is (if at all) and how much they have been going for. It's curiosity, really. It would be the same if I had a rare baseball card. I wouldn't sell it, but I want to know how much it is worth.

I know that name badges in the CW are very rare (that they survive at all). Take it to a gun show or a museum near you for a statement of value. Check out this web site - they may just be able to help ya.

I really don't know what it would be worth. ID tags "dog tags" were not issued by the govt during the Civil War. However many sutlers (independent businesses) sold brass tags that could be engraved with the owners regt/name/home state. Some of the soldiers aid societies like Christian Commission, U S Sanitary Commission etc gave out ID tags to troops. Try the following site for a start

To be frank, I don't think it is going to be worth very much. You could get a few hundred if you looked around. I think the price would also depend on the date it was issued, and the rank of your great great great grandfather.

BTW he has done an honor to fight our country, and ifoyo, the war was fought to preserve the union, not to end slavery.

Heroes of their time. 370,000 died to free the black slaves. And where is the recognition of their heroic sacrifice? Where are the reparations from the blacks to the Whites for the freedoms the blacks were given? Selling his personal effects would be like selling Jesus' robe.
