Internet Explorer is by far the most popular. Because its the most popular, all websites are written to be optimized to work best on IE. Other browsers such as Mozilla, Safari, and Opera may have display issues on some webpages that weren't coded properly.

Safari is the Apple equivalent to IE...recently however, it was released in a Windows version. Safari has been shown to have similar security risks that plague IE users... on top of that, since it is a Apple product and only holds a small percentage of the market, not all web pages will display properly. There are also not as many plugins available.

Opera is the most feature packed browser. It is possible to control nearly every aspect of the browswer using only the keyboard and its the only major browswer to include support for spatial navigation. It also supports "mouse gestures" where mouse patterns are recognized and morphed into mouse clicks and/or keystrokes. For example, by holding down the right mouse button and sliding the mouse to the left will execute a "back" command and return to the previous page. Holding down the right button and moving the mouse down will open a new tab. Also because Opera is not very popular, it is probably the most secure browser available. Hackers don't bother exploiting it because not many people use it.

Mozilla is the second most popular browser becuase it is well known as being much more secure than IE. Mozilla is Linux based and was brought into the mainstream by "Linux Geeks" who brought it to the attention of many IE users as being a better browswer. Initially this was the case, however now as it becomes more popular, more and more security holes are being found in the Mozilla browser. The big advantage here however, is that Mozilla is an open source project meaning the actual code of the program is available to the public. Because of this, the odds of the entire Linux community finding and fixing a security hole are better than the limited number of Microsoft IE programmers from fiding and fixing them.

Personally, I would say that Opera is the best browser out there... but only because it is feature packed with shortcuts that makes browsing very quick and efficient.... however I have noticed that many web pages don't display properly, but its never so bad that it interfers with the page usability. For me the few pages that don't work quite right are offset by the usability of the application.

Er, which is faster: a cheetah or a tortoise? Same with IE and Firefox. Not only is Firefox much faster, it is also more secure, has more versatility thanks to the large number of add-ons you can install to really personalise it, and it's just better all round. No competition really.
