Safe for Americans to travel in Saudi Arabia?
Should I have any concerns about my 13 year old daughter traveling to Saudi with her father? They are both American and would be staying with his father, also an American.
At that age, how should be dressed in public and would she need to cover her head?

OH please!.. dont let the 2 answers above scare you..
She will be perfectly fine.. There are so many americans working here that you'd be amazed..Some American (and many other western, like British, Australian, Canadian) families that have lived here for years..
They like it cause Saudi is safe.. There is no war here, no terrorism here.. People are friendly towards westerners.. And believe it or not, Americans are normally treated like royality here.. I know this sounds odd, but they are.. What you hear on the media back home is just propaganda negative news.. Family life is valued here and strongly lived by..
80% or more people here speak english or enough to understand..
Since your daughter is around the age of puberty, she will need to dress concervatively.. She can wear what she wants, blue jeans tshirts etc around home or the housing compound she stays at, but when she goes out to shop or the town, she needs to be accompanied by her father and yes she should wear an abaya.. the traditional black cover.. but she doesnt need to cover her hair.. no one will expect this of a young girl...
We welcome your daughter, this will be an exciting learning experience for her.. Come with a sense of humor and an open mind..^_^

yes of-course saudi arabia is a safe country to go to..it is like one of the most safest countries in the world...really the only time the middle east is not safe or when people have their life at threat is when they are palestinians living in gaza,,

My parents(my dad is a white American) lived in Dubai for a while pastoring a Christian church believe it or not! It can be safe if you know what you are doing. But always be aware of the cultural customs, your surroundings and of course the current state of world affairs.

It's safe, yeah sure!!! Be careful with how you dress, they do judge quite easily! In certain areas you might want to cover your head. Bring sunhats as it will be HOT. Long trousers. THin material so it's not weighing you down and have fun

Exactly like what Mintee said. Hell no, she doesn't have to wear a scarf on her head. that's a religious thing. Some people might find it offending. People there are very friendly. Don't worry they have food there. and some pretty good food too. And there is no terrorism. Have a safe trip =)

She has to wear a abaya because it is law in saudi arabia, and she cannot go out in public alone without a male relative escorting her.
P.S: mintee is completely right, you should pick her as a best answer.

Why in Allah's name would anybody go there for a trip. . . .cover your head, oh those are men and they have penises. . .watch out for the flies in your food, don't this or that. . . .Oh the dust will well up under your clothing and you will be dirty. No, No you can't talk to the boys, men smoke cigarettes and hashis and you inhaling that will stunt your growth.
Hey kid stay home and eat lots of apples, citrus and safe dairy products instead of lamb and camel cheese sandwiches.
Lastly be informed that a conflict is developing in that region and it is not going to be nice, Hamas had its first taste today
