What does Tai Chi (Supreme Ultimate) mean?
Yes it translates to supream ultimate. But I've been thinking what does that really mean.I think my ego missed the point for the last 10 years of training????
I was wondering really what Tai Chi's meaning was to other people. It was not a trick question. I've known most of the text book answers at an intellectual level. But it really came home to me only recently that I had been looking at it from a very egotistical view point, I had got too much into the supremeness and lost the emptyness. I just wondered what different peoples own opinions were on this question. For instance is Tai Chi the same as God.By the way this is genuine exploration. And also to everyone I am actually a female, and just joined yahoo questions last night. Thank you for all your answers. I think this site is awesome. x

I'm with Sensei Scandal. Why do you not know what the name means? The full name is Tai Chi Chuan. Tai chi is just the nick name or slang for Tai Chi Chuan. It means "Grand Ultimate Fist" to most people. It has been translated in other ways but this is the most common.

I don't see either Sensei Scandal's or my comments as hate. Where did you get that idea? Sensei Scandal and I are long term martial artists. We both simply find it hard to believe that someone that mentions 10 years of Tai Chi does not know what the name means. Does that make us mean or hateful? I don't think so. As for myself I can say that I'm tired of those that pretend to know something they don't. We see that every day here on Y/A. The fakes and pretenders may fool the newbies, but we can spot something fishy. In all fairness to the Asker, it is possible that he has ten years of Tai Chi and does not know the meaning of the name. It is just really hard to believe that that can be the case.

Why do you guys have to hate? You don't know AT1, so why do you WANT to call him a liar so badly? What deep insecurities exist within you to make you behave this way? Desperate to put someone else down, in the foolish belief that it will build you up.
AT1 it's interpreted commonly as Grand Ultimate Fist, though I have been told that this is a poor interpretation. Different regions interpret this differently and the Chinese language usually has different meanings attached to the same words. Hope this helps.

Actually the term "Taiji" refers to the ancient Chinese cosmological concept of the interplay between two opposite yet complementary forces (Yin and Yang) as being the foundation of creation. "Quan" literaly means "fist" and denotes an unarmed method of combat. Taijiquan as a martial art is based on the principle of the soft overcoming the hard.

Don't come here with lies.
If you trained in Taiji for 10 years, you would know.
Edit:
I am not a "hater" because I am not 15 y/o! That "hating" crap is for you children.
The question he is asking is the most basic knowledge of Taiji.
I have been doing this too long to not be able to sniff out the BS.
In 10 years, you should know everything you need to know about your arts history, your lineage, etc.
