Why does my laptop freeze and power off?
I have a 1 year old Toshiba Satellite A135-S7403 with Windows Vista. I download alot of movies and burn them too. It seems when I d/l movie torrents or I'm burning a movie the laptop freezes and then powers off shortly after. I began having this problem a month ago. What can I do to fix the problem? Should I clean it all out and get Windows XP instead of Vista?
It's not over heating because I have a cooling pad and I keep a room fan next to it to try and solve the problem but it still shuts off.

Well, there can be a few things wrong with it, first it could be your processor since it's been a few years it's accumulating dust and overheating so I would recommend removing it cleaning it and your fan, and if possible changing the coolant as most laptops have liquid or gas cooling. It may also be your RAM so maybe you can have it checked out at the nearest laptop repair center. It could also be your HDD depending on the noises you hear if there are any that of course if you don't have a SSHDD (Solid State Hard Disk Drive) which don't have any moving parts and therefore no noises. And there could also possibly be something wrong with your built-in GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) if thats the problem all of the other components are running well except your view as it freezes due to the crashing of the GPU. Therefore you must have it checked.

Possible Problems:
1. You keep the laptop on for too long, it may overheat.
2. You have some sort of virus on your computer.
3. Possible hardware problems related to the overheating, hard drive wear and tear?
Resolution:
1. Don't leave your laptop running for too long, by a fan for it if you have one.
2. Make sure you have a virus program up to date.
3. It wouldn't be a bad idea to reinstall the operating system and drivers.
Reason for XP over Vista:
1. If you feel that the visual aid is pointless.
2. If you don't care much for the quick search features on Vista.

You mentioned that you download a lot of movies from bittorrents. You probably contracted a virus/worm from your downloads. Unless you have a good Internet Security program installed with updated definitions, you won't know if those files you downloaded are "clean". Invest in a good internet security program such as Norton Internet Security or McAfee Internet Security. Don't download the free programs. They're not as aggressive as the ones I mentioned earlier.
